Éclats de Cirque 2026 – The contemporary circus festival returns to Lyon 🎪
On September 9th and 13th, 2026, the Éclats de Cirque festival returns to Lyon's 5th arrondissement for a new edition focused on creation, encounters, and sharing. Organized by the Lyon Circus School, in partnership with the MJC Ménival and with the support of UTOPISTES – Pôle National Cirque, this entirely free event offers an immersion in the best of contemporary circus through shows, participatory workshops, and numerous activities for all audiences.
This 2026 edition showcases a program predominantly featuring female artists, who explore powerful themes such as transmission, memory, the body, sisterhood, identity, freedom, and the fragility of human relationships with sensitivity and commitment. Blending poetry, humor, acrobatics, physical theatre, and live music, each creation offers a unique perspective on our society while fostering dialogue between different circus disciplines.
The festival kicks off on Wednesday, September 9th at 2 pm at the Diderot Gymnasium, behind the Ménival Youth and Culture Center – Lyon Circus School, with a fun-filled afternoon of activities, circus arts workshops, games, food, and drinks. This first day offers a chance to discover the world of the school, meet the artists, and share a festive moment with your family.
The festival's highlight takes place on Sunday, September 13th, starting at 10:00 AM, in the Parc de la Mairie in Lyon's 5th arrondissement, transformed for the occasion into a veritable circus village. Throughout the day, the public can enjoy several free open-air performances.
Among the creations presented, "Nôt Pièce" by La Volière de Velours offers a moving encounter between Emma, who left home at a young age to become a circus artist, and Mauricette, a 94-year-old farmer. Two women, two life paths, and a shared passion for their work intersect in a creation blending circus arts, life stories, memory, and poetry.
With "Les Baudrières", Compagnie L'Encordée brings together three women and six cotton ropes in an aerial adventure where mutual aid, trust and sisterhood become the driving forces of an impressive acrobatic exploration.
The Compagnie Les Enfants Sérieux presents "Belle à mourir" (Beautiful to Die For), a politically engaged production that questions the demands placed on the female body. Blending biting humor, absurdity, and physical performance, the show challenges the beauty standards imposed on women and our relationship to the gaze of others.
The Nuits Group presents "Fragile," a sensitive acrobatic work in which Astrid and Raphaël explore human connections within an unstable environment. Through acrobatic lifts and dance, they illuminate trust, doubts, vulnerabilities, and how each individual builds their relationship with another.
Finally, La Meute presents "Newroz," a concert-circus conceived by Bahoz Temaux. Inspired by Kurdish and Persian cultures, this musical and acrobatic show tells the story of a man confronted with prejudices related to his dual culture, identity, and gender. "Newroz," which means "new day" in Kurdish, celebrates hope, resilience, and living together.
Alongside the shows, the festival offers numerous introductory circus arts workshops for children as young as four. Families can participate in a parent-child workshop (reservations required), discover circus disciplines through introductory workshops, or simply enjoy a moment of discovery with juggling, balancing, acrobatics, and aerial techniques.
Throughout the day, young and old alike can also enjoy a rich program of activities: a screen printing workshop with Papy'Art, a balloon making workshop, face painting, wooden games, relaxation areas, food and drinks will contribute to making this day a truly festive occasion for the people.
Conceived as an event open to everyone, Éclats de Cirque 2026 celebrates an accessible, vibrant, and profoundly human circus. The festival showcases emerging regional companies while offering Lyon residents and visitors a unique opportunity to discover the richness of contemporary circus, free of charge.
