Affectus Formations
The "Dance and Fire Arts" professional training program offered by Affectus Formations is a five-day artistic and technical immersion for performing artists wishing to enrich their practice by integrating fire arts into their creations. Held from September 7th to 11th, 2026 at the Théâtre de Melchior in Charly, near Lyon, this intensive training program is limited to twelve participants to ensure individualized support, optimal progress, and privileged learning conditions.
Designed for dancers, circus artists, street performers, and more broadly, all movement artists, this training program allows participants to explore fire arts within a professional, safe, and resolutely contemporary creative framework. The objective is to develop a genuine stagecraft where movement, dance, flow art, and fire converge to give rise to sensitive, powerful, and controlled performances.
Each morning is dedicated to contemporary dance. Participants explore floor work, body awareness, weight transfers, balance, self-awareness and awareness of others, as well as choreographic improvisation. These sessions enrich each participant's physical vocabulary and develop a stronger stage presence, which will then serve as the foundation for their fire-based creations.
Throughout the week, trainees also attend technical classes dedicated to fire fans. Guided by experienced instructors, they gradually discover the various techniques, learn to create fluid and spectacular displays, and develop coordination, precise trajectories, and the gestural quality necessary for safe artistic practice. All equipment is provided by the training organization.
The training also includes a true introduction to the fire arts. Participants discover all the essential steps for professional practice: preparing equipment, soaking wicks, wringing them out, choosing fuels, ignition and extinguishing techniques, setting up a safe space, safety protocols and best practices allowing them to work confidently with fire in performance.
A significant portion of the program is dedicated to flow art. Thanks to the instructors and several specialized speakers, participants discover different disciplines of apparatus manipulation, develop their fluidity, coordination and creativity while experimenting with various objects used in the performing arts.
Because safety is a fundamental element of fire arts, a full half-day session is led by Morgan, a certified instructor from SAFETEAM, a specialist in fire safety applied to live performance. Participants learn essential risk prevention principles, how to organize a safe performance space, how to use fire extinguishers and fire blankets, and intervention procedures in case of an incident. Practical exercises allow them to practice extinguishing a fire in conditions similar to a real performance.
Beyond the technical aspects, this training places a strong emphasis on artistic creation. Throughout the week, each participant is guided in developing a personal solo piece using the apparatus of their choice. The instructors offer an artistic perspective on choreographic composition, staging, storytelling, stage presence, and the overall coherence of the performance, enabling each participant to develop their own unique style.
The week concludes with a professional video shoot. Under the guidance of Juliette, a specialized videographer, each participant receives comprehensive support to showcase their work. Trainees explore the specifics of night filming, techniques for lighting fire scenes, framing, visual scenography, and the fundamentals of dynamic editing. At the end of the training, each participant leaves with a professional-quality video that can be used to enhance their portfolio, respond to calls for projects, or promote their artistic work.

Angeline, a multidisciplinary dancer and street artist, has practiced fire arts for over ten years and teaches an approach that blends technical rigor with artistic exploration. Morgane, choreographer and artistic director of the En Flammes company, shares her experience gained with several companies and guides artists in creating contemporary works that combine dance and fire manipulation. Juliette, a professional videographer, contributes her expertise in capturing and visually enhancing the performances. Finally, Morgan, a SAFETEAM-certified fire safety instructor, ensures that participants acquire the essential knowledge to work with fire while adhering to safety standards.
The training program is accessible with the possibility of funding through AFDAS, which can cover not only tuition fees but also, depending on individual circumstances, accommodation and transportation. As places are intentionally limited to twelve participants, the support provided is highly personalized and fosters interaction between trainees and the teaching team.
A disability liaison officer is also identified to support people with disabilities in the preparation and execution of their training, ensuring a welcome adapted to the specific needs of each individual.
