For the 2026 European Heritage Days, the Isère Departmental Archives invite families to discover science in a fun way with "Young Audience Activity: Soap Bubbles", a free workshop specially designed to awaken children's curiosity about chemistry, physics and the amazing properties of water.
Organized on September 19 and 20, 2026, at the Isère Departmental Archives in Saint-Martin-d'Hères, this event offers an original approach combining scientific experimentation, observation, and hands-on activities. Workshops are offered continuously from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, allowing visitors to participate freely throughout the afternoon, without a fixed schedule.
The workshop invites children to answer a question that everyone has asked themselves: how to make magnificent soap bubbles with rainbow reflections? To answer this, they carry out several scientific experiments themselves in order to understand the phenomena that make bubbles so fascinating.
Through various hands-on activities, young participants discover the essential role of each ingredient in the bubble mixture. They experiment, observe the reactions, compare the results, and understand why certain recipes produce bubbles that are more resistant, larger, or have particularly spectacular iridescent colors.
The activity constantly alternates between play, discovery, and experimentation, offering children the opportunity to learn while having fun. By directly manipulating the different components, they discover the concepts of surface tension, the elasticity of the water film, and the surprising properties of soap, all while developing their observational skills and scientific curiosity.
This activity complements the exhibition "Conquering Water in the 19th and 20th Centuries in Isère," presented at the Departmental Archives. This exhibition traces the evolution of water management and use in the department, from the time when water was drawn from fountains or wells to the widespread adoption of running water in homes. The workshops provide a concrete illustration of some of the properties of water discussed in the exhibition and establish a link between historical heritage and scientific culture.
Primarily aimed at young audiences but accessible to the whole family, this activity offers an excellent opportunity to share a fun moment while discovering science in a simple and interactive way. Parents and children can participate together, observe the experiments, and interact with the on-site facilitators.
The event is entirely free, allowing everyone to freely enjoy the activities offered during the European Heritage Days weekend. There are no fees, and the workshops are accessible throughout their opening hours.
The Isère Departmental Archives, located at 12 rue Georges Perec in Saint-Martin-d'Hères, have free parking accessible via the south entrance on rue Georges Perec. The site is also very well served by public transport: buses C5 and C7 (Les Alpilles stop) as well as trams B and C, with stops at Gabriel Fauré – MUSE, Université Bibliothèques or Université Condillac, provide easy access to the event venue.
The premises are wheelchair accessible with assistance, allowing as many people as possible to enjoy the activities. However, pets are not allowed on the premises.
