A multidisciplinary circus school in Saint-Jean-de-Braye, near Orléans, offering year-round courses, workshops and circus classes under the big top to discover and deepen your knowledge of circus arts.
The Alexis & Anargul Gruss Circus School is located in Saint-Jean-de-Braye , in the Loiret region, very close to Orléans. Housed in a genuine circus complex comprising several permanent big tops, it offers year-round immersion in the world of circus through regular classes, workshops during school holidays, circus classes, and various shows.
The school is run by Alexis and Anargul Gruss , both professional circus artists. They took over the management of the school in 2008 and have since developed a project combining the transmission of circus techniques, amateur practice and the world of performance.
Alexis Gruss is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in acrobatics, clowning, balancing, and juggling. He has developed his career through various circus seasons and notably won an award at the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival for a rolla bolla duo act.
Anargul is originally from Kazakhstan. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in a conservatory in her country in 1995, where she studied for four years before earning her diploma as a circus artist, specializing in balancing and contortion. Her artistic career then took her to England, Poland, Ukraine, and finally France, where she met Alexis. After several seasons working together, the couple settled in Saint-Jean-de-Braye with their children.
The school's goal is to allow as many people as possible to discover circus arts, regardless of their starting level. Instruction is adapted to the age and abilities of each participant so that everyone can progress at their own pace, experiment with different techniques, and gradually develop their own style.
The learning process is intentionally multidisciplinary . Students can discover numerous circus techniques and approaches before specializing.
Juggling is approached through various objects, including balls , clubs , and diabolos . This diversity allows participants to explore several major families of circus arts before further developing the disciplines with which they have the most affinity.
The training is provided by a team of circus professionals, and the activities benefit from equipment specifically designed for the disciplines taught. Particular attention is paid to safety , especially when learning aerial techniques and balances.
For younger children, discovery largely happens through play. The exercises are designed to build children's confidence while gradually introducing basic technical skills. Circus arts thus become a way to discover their bodies, develop motor skills, coordination and balance, and also learn to move in space.
As children grow older, learning becomes progressively more technical. The school offers groups specifically for 6-9 year olds and then for children aged 10 and up. Students can then explore different subjects in greater depth, set their own goals, and progress at their own pace and according to their abilities.
Beyond learning the moves, the school emphasizes several values associated with the collective practice of circus arts: respect , perseverance , pushing oneself to the limit , and mutual support . Certain disciplines also allow students to work on their apprehension of heights, balance, and the confidence necessary to gradually perform new moves.
The performance aspect plays a significant role in the educational program. At the end of the year, the students participate in a show presented to their families. Costumes, makeup, lighting, music, and stage presence allow them to discover the various stages that transform technical training into a genuine circus act.
This experience gives participants the opportunity to step into the shoes of a circus artist for the duration of a performance. They discover not only the technical demands of their discipline, but also performing in front of an audience, staging, and the collective workings of a show.
In addition to regular classes, the Alexis & Anargul Gruss Circus School organizes workshops during school holidays. Open to children aged 5 and up , these workshops allow them to discover several disciplines for a full week in the circus tent environment.
The workshops combine introductory lessons, practical exercises, and performance preparation. Participants discover the various techniques offered by the school, then choose and work on specific disciplines in preparation for a performance. The week culminates in a show presented on Friday for families, complete with costumes, makeup, and a spotlight on the children in the Cirque Gruss ring.
The school also develops Circus Classes for schools. Entire classes can come and work under the big top as part of an educational project organized over several days. Students begin by discovering circus arts through rotating workshops before choosing a discipline, perfecting their skills, and collectively preparing a show.
These projects place great emphasis on collaboration and mutual support. They also allow schools to develop a cross-curricular project encompassing physical activity, creative expression, and live performance. Several classes can participate during the same week.
The learning environment is one of the school's distinctive features. The facilities include several permanent spaces:
This location allows students to directly experience the professional world of entertainment.
The site also hosts productions and events throughout the year. The Christmas Circus is one of the major regular events at the venue and brings together international professional artists under the big tops of Saint-Jean-de-Braye.
The proximity between the school and professional artistic activities allows students to develop in an environment where circus arts are present both as a leisure activity and as a profession and form of live performance.
The complex also hosts events, shows, dinner shows, and various other functions. Its big tops can be transformed and configured according to the projects, which helps make the site a true cultural and event venue dedicated to the world of circus.
Through its year-round courses, holiday workshops, circus classes, and performances, the Alexis & Anargul Gruss Circus School offers several entry points into the circus arts. Children can make their first discoveries, gradually develop their technique, and then experience creating and presenting an act in front of an audience.
The school is further distinguished by its direct mentoring of professional artists to amateur practitioners and by its location under permanent big tops. In Saint-Jean-de-Braye, learning, training, and performance thus take place side-by-side in the same location, allowing students to discover circus arts in an environment directly connected to the ring and artistic life.
