Founded in 2001, Circ Ô Charivari is a non-profit circus school located in Couzeix, near Limoges in the Haute-Vienne department (87) . It allows children, teenagers, and adults to discover the circus arts through a fun, artistic, and collaborative approach. Its program combines juggling, balancing, acrobatics, mime, magic, dance, and stagecraft . Beyond technical training, Circ Ô Charivari aims to develop creativity, artistic expression, cooperation, and confidence within the group. Students participate in the creation of acts and shows, including the traditional end-of-year performance held in Couzeix.
Founded in 2001 , Circ Ô Charivari is a non-profit circus school located in Couzeix, Haute-Vienne, very close to Limoges . For over twenty years, the association has been developing an amateur approach to circus arts, combining technical training, artistic expression, collective creation and community education.
Originally, the organization was called Cirquement Chouette . In 2001, it joined the Couzeix Sports, Cultural and Secular Association, which later became Sports Loisirs Couzeix. In 2009, Cirquement Chouette became Circ Ô Charivari , the name under which the school continues its activities today.
The Circ Ô Charivari association's project is particularly interesting because it doesn't reduce circus arts education to the learning of technical skills. The association's official objective is to teach young and old alike the various techniques of circus arts in order to gradually enable them to create and present their own shows .
The proposed practice is multidisciplinary and officially involves:
This diversity allows us to approach the circus both as a physical activity and as a true artistic practice.
Juggling helps develop coordination, concentration, precision and rhythm.
Balance exercises focus more on body awareness, positioning, and the ability to maintain or regain a stable position.
Acrobatics , on the other hand, allows one to explore the possibilities of the body in space and to gradually acquire more bodily control.
Circ Ô Charivari also has a more unusual dimension for an amateur circus school with the integration of magic into its program. Magic remains part of the association's identity: shows and introductory workshops are organized periodically in Couzeix, notably with Igor , an artist from the association.
Mime, dance, and staging complement this approach. Their presence reflects an artistic conception of the circus: mastering a technique is one step, but one must then learn to use it to construct an act, develop an intention, occupy space, and communicate with an audience.
This creative dimension is at the heart of the Circ Ô Charivari project. Participants are encouraged to use the various techniques discovered during classes in order to collectively imagine artistic proposals and performances.
The association therefore places particular importance on the development of artistic sense and creativity . The student is not simply asked to reproduce an exercise: he gradually learns to make choices, propose ideas and participate in their transformation into a collective creation.
The group dynamic is also an essential component of this pedagogy. Circ Ô Charivari explicitly advocates a cooperative and civic approach. Participants learn to express their opinions, but also to listen to those of others in order to collectively decide on the direction of a creative project and on choices concerning the group.
This approach places circus arts at the service of skills that go far beyond physical practice: listening, cooperation, public speaking, respect for others, ability to build collectively and individual responsibility fully participate in learning.
The association also specifies that its work is conducted with respect for the physical and moral integrity of children and adolescents . Technical development is therefore part of an educational project where safety and respect for the individual play a significant role.
Circ Ô Charivari caters to both young and old . The activities organized in recent years demonstrate a particular openness towards children as young as 4, as well as teenagers and adults. The association thus seeks to make the discovery of circus arts accessible to different generations.
This openness is illustrated by the occasional introductory workshops offered in the area. In January 2025, for example, Circ Ô Charivari organised a workshop at the Couzeix media library for 4-7 year olds , followed by a second workshop announced for 7-99 year olds .
Magic was also part of the program with the show "Chance Does Things Well," presented by Igor from Circ Ô Charivari. The show and workshops allowed the audience to move directly from the position of spectator to that of participant.
The association actively participates in the cultural and community life of Couzeix . It belongs to Sports Loisirs Couzeix, a local structure that federates the sports and cultural associations of the town while allowing each club its decision-making and financial autonomy.
This location allows Circ Ô Charivari to participate in local community events and to introduce circus arts to new audiences.
The end-of-year show is one of the highlights of the season. In June 2026, the association brought its students together at the Broussaud gymnasium in Couzeix to present to the public the results of the work done during the year.
Young and old artists alike presented their acts, focusing on acrobatics, balance, and juggling . Beyond the technical demonstration, this show allowed students to discover all the stages leading to a public performance: preparation, rehearsal, act development, staging, and facing the audience.
The performance thus becomes the logical culmination of the educational project. The techniques learned during the year are transformed into artistic material and integrated into a creation intended to be shared with families and the public.
The friendly atmosphere is also an important aspect of these events. The 2026 show, for example, combined a performance, refreshments, and food, with admission based on a voluntary contribution. It was therefore as much a part of the community life of Couzeix as it was an artistic showcase for the students.
After more than twenty years of existence, Circ Ô Charivari is today a well-established amateur circus school in the associative landscape of Couzeix and the Limoges metropolitan area .
Its unique feature lies in the diversity of its project: acrobatics, balance, and juggling are combined with mime, dance, magic, and stagecraft . Technical skills thus become the starting point for a genuine creative process.
Through its courses, workshops, shows and collective projects, Circ Ô Charivari ultimately uses circus arts as a tool to develop:
An approach to amateur circus based as much on the pleasure of practicing as on that of inventing and creating together.
