Circus school for children and teenagers in Hamburg offering regular classes, holiday camps and participatory circus projects. From age 3, youngsters can discover and then develop their skills in juggling, unicycle, trapeze, acrobatics, balance, clowning and many other circus disciplines.
Circus Mignon is a circus school for children and teenagers located in the Iserbrook district of Hamburg. Founded in 1992, the project has been developing a pedagogical approach to circus arts for over thirty years, in which children can discover circus disciplines, develop their skills and participate in the creation of real shows.
The program caters to several age groups. The youngest children can take their first steps into the world of circus from the age of 3 with FlohCircus. Older children can then participate in circus classes and the various programs offered by MitmachCircus, allowing them to discover or further develop their circus skills.
The activities offered cover a very wide range of disciplines. Children can practice juggling with various objects, diabolo, devilstick, unicycle, balance ball, tightrope walking, trapeze, acrobatics, stilt walking, and clowning. Depending on the projects, they can also discover more specific disciplines and characters such as fakir, magic, or different forms of aerial acrobatics.
Circus Mignon's teaching method places great emphasis on experimentation . Participants don't simply reproduce exercises; they explore various disciplines, choose those that suit them, and gradually learn to create acts. Creativity, diverse movements, and personal expression are thus integral to the learning process.
Performances are an essential element of the project. After honing their skills and preparing their acts, the young artists have the opportunity to present the results of their work to a real audience. This stage experience allows them to combine technical learning, creativity, self-confidence, and participation in a collective project.
Circus Mignon also offers circus camps and weeks during school holidays. The MitmachCircus concept, for example, allows children to experience a multi-day immersion in the world of the circus: they choose disciplines, train with the teaching team, prepare their acts, and then conclude the experience with a performance.
The school has also been working with other schools for many years. Entire classes can participate in circus weeks during which regular lessons are temporarily replaced by unicycling, juggling, diabolo, devilstick, tightrope walking, balance ball, clowning, and other circus arts. These projects generally culminate in a performance for the families and friends of the participants.
For young people wishing to go further, Circus Mignon has also developed programs allowing for more in-depth artistic work. Participants acquire artistic foundations, refine their skills, and take part in the creation of more ambitious productions.
Beyond physical skills, circus arts pedagogy helps develop concentration , perseverance , coordination , and self-confidence . Collaborative creation also encourages mutual support, taking responsibility, and the ability to find one's place within a group.
Circus Mignon is one of the historic circus education projects in Hamburg. With its regular classes, activities for very young children, holiday camps, projects with schools and the creation of shows, the organization offers different pathways allowing children to discover the circus arts from childhood and to continue this practice during adolescence.
