Circus Projekt Waldoni eV is a leading circus arts education, arts education, and experiential learning organization based in Darmstadt-Eberstadt, Hesse. Recognized as an independent youth support organization, Waldoni combines circus arts training, artistic creation, social work, and educational projects.

The project is located at Creativhof Grenzallee , a former military site that has been progressively transformed into a vibrant cultural, educational, and social hub. The site includes a big top , a circus training hall , an art studio , offices, and a former circus vehicle converted into a café. This environment allows children and teenagers to practice in conditions similar to those of a real circus.

Waldoni offers regular groups that allow children to begin circus arts in early childhood and continue practicing through adolescence and young adulthood. The Mini Waldoni programs are specifically designed for preschool and primary school children. The first groups welcome children as young as 5 , with an approach that emphasizes the joy of movement and a playful introduction to the circus.

From around the age of 8 , children can begin to explore more demanding techniques. As they grow older, they gradually join the other Waldoni groups and participate more in the organization's creations and performances.

The disciplines practiced are very diverse. Young people discover, in particular, juggling, acrobatics, tightrope walking, unicycling, trapeze, balancing acts, and various forms of individual and group acrobatics. However, technical training constitutes only one part of the educational program.

Waldoni indeed sees the circus as a way for children and teenagers to discover abilities they were sometimes unaware of. The training encourages them to experiment , develop their self-confidence , discover their artistic talents, and experience the satisfaction of success after gradual learning.

The theatrical dimension also plays an important role. The young people do not only work on technical skills: they learn to be present on stage, to interpret a character, to create acts and to integrate their disciplines into a real show.

Performances are therefore an essential component of Waldoni's pedagogy. Several productions are organized each year, allowing the different groups to present their work to an audience in the project's big top.

For teenagers from around 15 years old , Waldoni offers a particularly well-developed Variety group. Each year, about forty young people participate in the creation of a summer show with a more advanced technical and artistic level.

The young people at Varieté are heavily involved in the creation of their own show. They participate in the development of the story and the acts, as well as in the selection of music, lighting, and costumes. Each production thus becomes a reflection of the collective work and artistic concerns of the young participants.

Specialized training with professional artists also allows teenagers to delve deeper into specific disciplines. Waldoni, in particular, offers individual training for those 12 and older , focusing on handstands, dynamic acrobatics, and partner acrobatics. Some young people trained at the center have gone on to pursue professional careers in the circus.

In addition to weekly group classes, Waldoni organizes numerous workshops during school holidays. Children who have already started primary school and are up to 14 years old can spend several days immersed in the world of circus. They experience activities such as balancing on the ball, walking the tightrope, performing on the trapeze, juggling, and building human pyramids.

These workshops culminate in a real performance in the big top. In just a few days, the children discover the entire process from learning a discipline to presenting it to an audience.

Waldoni also develops numerous projects with schools. The teams can work directly in a school with circus equipment or host classes at their own facilities. Projects can last a day, a weekend, or a full week and generally culminate in a performance prepared by the students.

Several Circus-AG events are also regularly organized in schools in Darmstadt. These partnerships allow children who do not necessarily attend Waldoni to discover circus arts in their school setting.

The social dimension is a fundamental characteristic of the project. Waldoni is strongly established in the Darmstadt-Eberstadt district and seeks in particular to make its activities accessible to children and adolescents from families with limited resources.

Circus arts are used as a tool to develop self-confidence , independence , perseverance , and cooperation . Each child should be able to find their place within the group and contribute to the performance according to their abilities. Waldoni's philosophy is based on the idea that everyone possesses skills that can be discovered and valued.

This approach is extended through various social and prevention projects. The Waldoni Kinder- und Jugendstiftung , created in 2006 , contributes in particular to the financing of actions aimed at children and adolescents living in neighborhoods facing social difficulties.

Creativhof isn't just about the circus. It also houses a sculpture and art workshop where teenagers work with metal and various recycled materials. Nature-based and experiential learning activities further round out the offerings for young people.

Activities are also available to adults and families, including open training, parent-child acrobatics, and participatory workshops. Waldoni thus uses the circus as a meeting point between different generations.

The project benefits from strong local roots and institutional recognition. The redevelopment of the Creativhof and its role in the neighborhood have notably been recognized with the Deutscher Städtebaupreis (German Urban Planning Award).

Waldoni is therefore much more than just a school offering a few circus classes. With its big top, training hall, weekly groups, variety show for teenagers, holiday camps, school interventions, performances, art workshop and social projects, the structure represents a true center dedicated to circus pedagogy and arts education in Darmstadt.
