Founded in 1989 in Montigny-lès-Metz, Moselle (57) , Cirk'Eole is a circus school accredited by the French Federation of Circus Schools (FFEC), and also a place dedicated to training, creation, and the dissemination of contemporary circus arts. The school welcomes children, teenagers, and adults to explore a wide range of disciplines: juggling, acrobatics, object balancing, and aerial arts , with specialized courses in juggling and aerial arts. Cirk'Eole also offers holiday workshops, parent-child workshops for children as young as two, adapted circus programs, and projects with schools. The school hosts professional companies in residence, programs performances, and organizes the Les Nuits d'Éole festival. It also runs a two-year preparatory course for entry into higher education institutions specializing in circus arts , making Cirk'Eole a comprehensive space where amateur practice, professional training, and contemporary creation converge.
Created in 1989 in Montigny-lès-Metz, in Moselle , Cirk'Eole is a circus school and a place dedicated to circus creation supported by Loisirs et Culture , a popular education association founded in 1954. Throughout its history, the structure has progressively developed a particularly comprehensive project bringing together amateur practice, pre-professional training, artistic and cultural education, adapted circus, hosting artists in residence and the dissemination of contemporary circus shows .
The school became more professional with the acquisition of its accreditation from the French Federation of Circus Schools (FFEC) in 2001 and now has several specific spaces in Montigny-lès-Metz: a circus school on rue des Couvents, administrative and ticket office premises nearby, as well as a big top on rue Pierre de Coubertin.
Cirk'Eole welcomes a diverse audience throughout the year. Approximately 180 children and twenty adults regularly practice circus arts at the school. Activities begin in early childhood with parent-child workshops for 2-3 year olds and continue with a progressive educational program for children and teenagers, followed by classes for adults aged 16 and over.
For the 2026-2027 season, Cirk'Eole has completely redesigned its children's program to better support each child's progress. Groups are no longer solely based on age; experience and acquired skills are also taken into account. The program is symbolically named after winds: Breath, Breeze, Mistral, Flight, Hurricane, and finally, Troupe . " Aeolus Gateways " also allow children who join the program later to gradually reach the level corresponding to their age and abilities.
This organization reflects the desire to build a genuine pathway for circus arts progression . The youngest students discover their bodies, space, and objects before gradually moving on to more technical skills. As they advance through the program, students can deepen their understanding of their disciplines, develop their independence, and become more involved in the artistic and collective aspects of the circus.
Parent-child workshops for children aged 2-3 years and older provide the first point of entry. They are based on playful activities and scenarios that encourage motor and sensory exploration. The adult accompanies the child in their explorations and participates in a first encounter with the circus environment.
During school holidays, Cirk'Eole also organizes circus workshops . For preschool children, the introductory workshops focus on spontaneous exploration, play, and creativity to develop gross and fine motor skills. Older children can participate in more intensive beginner workshops. Workshops are offered during school holidays until mid-August, with the exception of the Christmas holidays.
Cirk'Eole also develops a significant arts and cultural education program. Circus classes and projects are created in partnership with schools. These activities can take place directly at the circus school, in schools, under the Cirk'Eole big top, or as part of residential programs. These projects allow students to discover circus techniques and also to experience the professional world of live performance.
Adapted circus arts are another important aspect of the project. Cirk'Eole develops programs for people with specific needs and strives to tailor educational activities to each individual's abilities. These programs can be enriched through encounters with artists in residence, access to performances programmed by the organization, or participation in school events.
This close relationship with professional artists is one of Cirk'Eole's defining characteristics. Since 2003 , hosting artist residencies has become one of the organization's main areas of development outside of the school. Companies come to Montigny-lès-Metz to work on their new creations and can meet directly with amateur performers and students.
These residencies foster exchanges around techniques, equipment, and creative processes, as well as presentations of work-in-progress or residency showcases. For a young practitioner, this close proximity helps them understand that circus arts are not limited to learning a series of tricks: techniques become tools serving a narrative, an artistic universe, and a relationship with the audience.
Cirk'Eole also actively promotes contemporary circus . Since 1998, the organization has notably hosted the biennial festival Les Nuits d'Éole , an event dedicated to circus arts creation. Professional shows, premieres, student productions, workshops, and discussions foster dialogue between artists, practitioners, and audiences.
The preparatory class for entry into higher schools of circus arts is a two-year course for young people aged 16 to 22 who wish to build a professional project and prepare for competitions.
The training combines practical instruction and professional immersion, with particular attention paid to injury prevention and individual monitoring.
In addition to this physical and artistic preparation, there is a particularly comprehensive education covering dramaturgy, music, English, scenography, the history of circus and art, safety, the big top, knowledge of the professional environment, and the artist's health . Professional immersions complete the curriculum.
The training program places particular emphasis on injury prevention and individual monitoring. Healthcare professionals, osteopaths, and high-performance sports specialists may be involved, while specific courses address the hygiene and health of circus performers.
The results of previous cohorts clearly demonstrate the preparatory function of Cirk'Eole: several students have subsequently entered major higher education institutions such as the CNAC in Châlons-en-Champagne, the ESAC in Brussels or Codarts in Rotterdam .
The 2026-2028 class began their studies on September 1, 2026. It currently comprises students specializing in aerial straps, tightrope, acrobatic lifts, rope, and Korean cradle . The training itself is free thanks to the support of public partners; only annual administrative fees are required.
Cirk'Eole is therefore much more than just a leisure school. In Montigny-lès-Metz, the structure builds a real continuity between the first motor explorations of a 2-year-old child, amateur practice, adolescent improvement, preparation for a professional career and the encounter with contemporary circus artists.
This integration of teaching, creation, performance, professional training, adapted circus, and arts education makes Cirk'Eole a particularly comprehensive venue. Children, teenagers, adults, school groups, people with disabilities, and aspiring professional artists can discover circus arts at various levels, all while developing within an environment directly connected to contemporary creation and the professional world.
