Presentation

The Entente Sportive Guyancourtoise de Gymnastique , more commonly known as ESG Gym , is a sports association based in Guyancourt, in the Yvelines department. While the club has historically been strongly linked to gymnastics and acrobatics, it also develops a dedicated circus arts section, currently recognized by the French Federation of Circus Schools.

Activities offered

  • Artistic Gymnastics
  • Trampoline
  • Baby Gym
  • Tricking
  • Circus arts

ESG Gym offers several complementary activities focused on the body and acrobatics. This close connection between gymnastics and circus arts is a unique feature of the organization: participants develop in an environment where learning fundamental acrobatics can be combined with juggling, object balancing, and artistic expression. The club has access to several specialized sports facilities provided by the City of Guyancourt.

Circus teaching

Circus arts training is organized around several major disciplines. Acrobatics forms one of the foundations of the practice: students work on ground movements that develop dexterity, flexibility, strength, and balance. In addition to gymnastic fundamentals, they incorporate lifts performed in pairs or groups, group movements, and elements of contortion. The school also encourages creativity: students can gradually invent their own movements or draw inspiration from other physical disciplines such as breakdancing or capoeira.

Balances on objects

  • Unicycle
  • American roll (rolla-bolla)
  • Balance ball
  • Thread
  • Stilts

These disciplines develop body control, the adaptation of motor skills to different surfaces, positioning, observation, and balance perception. Learning also incorporates risk management and respect for safety rules, both for oneself and for others.

Juggling

Juggling is particularly diverse: the first manipulations can be done with scarves before moving on to balls. Students can then discover different objects such as hoops, clubs, and hats. The diabolo , the devil stick , bolas , and plates are also among the techniques presented by the school. These activities help develop dexterity, precision, coordination, and fine motor skills.

Expression and spectacle

Instruction is not limited to the physical and technical mastery of the apparatus. Expression constitutes a distinct area of focus: playful exercises allow participants to learn to express themselves in front of others, to interact with their partners, and to gradually prepare for performing before an audience. This dimension is essential for connecting athletic and technical practice to the artistic dimension of circus performance.

Acrobatic walkways

The environment at ESG Gym offers connections to other acrobatic disciplines. Trampoline is a core activity of the club, allowing participants to develop spatial awareness, rotations, somersaults, and twists. Tricking , also taught in Guyancourt, combines influences from martial arts, acrobatics, and other contemporary movement practices. While these activities have their own dedicated sections, their presence contributes to the club's strong acrobatic focus.

ESG Gym has several specialized facilities made available by the City of Guyancourt: the Aviation gymnasium, the Human Rights gymnasium, and the Maurice Baquet gymnasium. The club reports that several hundred people use these facilities each week for various gymnastic and acrobatic activities, providing an environment conducive to learning and technical development.

Federal network and events

The Circus Arts section is part of the French federal network: the Entente Sportive Guyancourtoise de Gymnastique (ESG Gym) is listed in the directory of the French Federation of Circus Schools (FFEC). The association actively participates in the network: ESG Gym was among the schools represented at the 2026 FFEC Regional Meetings and hosted a regional meeting in Guyancourt in 2025.

The transmission of circus arts occasionally extends beyond the annual courses: the City of Guyancourt works with the association to offer circus workshops as part of its activities. Each season, the club also organizes various events, gatherings, and highlights (including galas) centered around its disciplines, emphasizing the collective aspect and showcasing the work of its practitioners.

Registrations 2026-2027

For the 2026-2027 season, registration is open subject to availability. The club has published a new schedule and a new pricing structure: fees are now calculated based on the number of classes attended each week, regardless of the discipline, which allows, for example, combining a circus class with another ESG Gym activity.

Skills developed

The learning within the Circus Arts section aims at several technical and cross-cutting objectives:

  • Coordination
  • Precision
  • Balance
  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Risk management
  • Creativity
  • Ability to evolve with others

The objective is not limited to successfully performing a move: it is also about developing motor, relational and artistic qualities in the practitioners.

Acrobatics, lifts, contortion, unicycle, rolla-bolla, ball, wire, stilts, balls, scarves, hoops, clubs, diabolo, devil stick, bolas, plates and expression allow students to explore the different dimensions of the circus.

Through its affiliation with the FFEC, its participation in federal meetings, the diversity of its disciplines and its links with the acrobatic activities of the association, the Circus Arts section of ESG Gym fully finds its place among the amateur circus practice structures of Yvelines and western Île-de-France.
