Founded in 1997, Gus Circus is a circus school located at the Espace Raymond Devos in Saint-Vallier, Saône-et-Loire. Open to children, teenagers, and adults, it offers a multidisciplinary approach to circus arts, combining juggling, acrobatics, partner acrobatics, object balancing, and aerial disciplines. Students can discover the diabolo, tightrope, balance ball, rolla-bolla, trampoline, trapeze, silks, aerial hoop, and straps. The school also places great importance on creation and performance: its students participate in the meetings of the French Federation of Circus Schools, and some of their creations are selected for the National Meetings organized as part of the Circa Festival in Auch. Approved by the FFEC and a member of the FREC Bourgogne, Gus Circus also organizes holiday courses, introductory sessions and shows, and actively participates in the cultural life of Saint-Vallier and the Creusot Montceau area.
Gus Circus is a circus arts school located in Saint-Vallier, Saône-et-Loire. Run by the FJEP (Youth and Popular Education Federation), it has been operating since 1997 and has been developing a project dedicated to the discovery, practice, creation, and transmission of circus arts for nearly thirty years. The school is currently located at Espace Raymond Devos, on Rue Camille Desmoulins.
Open to children, teenagers, and adults, Gus Circus offers a multidisciplinary approach that allows participants to discover the major branches of circus arts: juggling, object balancing, acrobatics, partner acrobatics, and aerial disciplines. Participants can thus experiment with different techniques before gradually developing their preferences and specialties.
Juggling plays a significant role in the school's activities. The various performances and creations of Gus Circus, in particular, demonstrate the use of balls and diabolo. Workshops allow students to develop coordination, precision, concentration, rhythm, and creativity, from the discovery of basic manipulations to much more elaborate acts.
Balance is another essential aspect of the curriculum. Students practice activities such as tightrope walking, balance ball walking, and rolla-bolla. These disciplines help develop body control, positioning, concentration, and self-confidence, while offering very different approaches to balance.
Acrobatics and partner work complement this practice. Individual and group work come together through floor acrobatics, trampoline, and various forms of partner work. These disciplines develop motor skills, coordination, and body awareness, as well as the trust and cooperation essential for working in groups.
Gus Circus also boasts a particularly diverse aerial arts program. The students' performances showcase their proficiency with the trapeze, aerial silks, aerial hoop, and straps. These disciplines demand strength, flexibility, precision, and body control, and gradually allow for the development of genuine aesthetic and stagecraft.
This technical diversity is put to use in a project that goes far beyond simple initiation. Creation and performance occupy an important place in the identity of Gus Circus. The students work on acts and collective creations that are regularly presented to the public during the school's shows and at various local events.
The end-of-season shows are therefore important moments in the life of the school. Students from different generations present their work and showcase to the public the full diversity of the practices taught: aerial arts, juggling, acrobatics, lifts and balances follow one another or are combined within creations designed for the stage.
Gus Circus also actively participates in events organized by the FFEC. These gatherings allow young practitioners to meet students from other schools, share their experiences, participate in workshops, and present their creations to new audiences.
The school was represented at the Burgundy Regional Meetings in 2025 and again in 2026. In May 2026, Gus Circus was one of four schools, along with Balle au Bond, Or Piste, and Acroballe Circus, participating in the Regional Meetings held in Dijon. More than one hundred participants attended.
This federal dynamic can lead the school's creations to the National Circus School Meetings, organized annually in Auch as part of the Circa Festival. In 2025, Gus Circus was among the selected schools and presented its creation "The Investigation" on one of the National Stages.
This presence at Circa is a particularly enriching experience for the students. It allows them to present their work at one of the major events of contemporary French circus, to discover the creations of other schools and to meet young people involved in different circus careers.
Gus Circus also organizes introductory and advanced training courses during school holidays. These periods allow participants to explore or delve deeper into several disciplines, including aerial arts, acrobatics, juggling, and balancing. They offer children and young people a more intensive format than the weekly classes and also serve as an introduction to the school.
Gus Circus's activities extend beyond its own members. The school regularly participates in events organized in Saint-Vallier and the surrounding towns, where it offers introductory circus arts workshops. These workshops allow the general public to discover different techniques in a friendly and accessible environment.
This local presence directly aligns with the FJEP's mission, which supports the school. The FJEP's work is rooted in the values of popular education, and it seeks to contribute to cultural activities and social cohesion in Saint-Vallier and throughout the Creusot Montceau urban community.
The association's bylaws explicitly include the development of the Gus Circus school among its missions. They stipulate the promotion of circus arts in the region, the organization of events and performances, and the implementation of educational practices rooted in community education. The objective is, in particular, to contribute to the intellectual and social development and training of the minors and young adults enrolled.
This educational dimension explains the significant emphasis placed on group living. Circus disciplines naturally foster perseverance, autonomy, confidence, mutual support, and responsibility. Group lifts and creations particularly reinforce this need to trust others and build together.
Gus Circus also actively participates in local cultural life. The school regularly participates in local festivals and events, offering introductory workshops and performances. For example, it takes part in the Queulots Folies festival in Saint-Vallier, where the public can discover circus arts with the school's team.
The school also develops its own events. End-of-season galas and shows allow families and the public to discover the work done throughout the year. Other events take more original forms, such as cabaret evenings organized as part of Circus Night, combining student acts, a friendly atmosphere, and entertainment.
During these cabarets, the various disciplines and personalities of the performers can be expressed through clown-juggling acts, aerial silks, aerial hoop, diabolo, or trapeze. These events illustrate the diversity of practices and the importance given to the stage in the students' development.
Gus Circus also offers shows for the general public. For the 2026-2027 season, the school is notably preparing "Gus Circus Christmas," announced for December 13, 2026, in Saint-Vallier. The students will present a new family-friendly production, conceived as a magical journey blending emotions, surprises, and circus arts.
The school has a long-standing federal recognition. Accredited by the FFEC since 2002, it is now a member of the FREC Bourgogne and holds FFEC accreditation no. 71235. This membership in the federal network supports its commitment to structured teaching and quality amateur practice.
With nearly thirty years of experience, Gus Circus is now a major player in the circus arts scene in Saône-et-Loire. At Espace Raymond Devos, children, teenagers, and adults can discover or further develop their skills in:
From early learning to the creation of an act presented at Circa, Gus Circus champions a living, collective and creative circus, deeply rooted in the values of popular education.
