Bremen Circus School offers year-round courses for children and teenagers from age 4. Juggling, acrobatics, unicycle, trapeze, aerial silks, balance, tightrope walking and many other disciplines are taught in an approach combining circus pedagogy, artistic creation, inclusion and teamwork.
JOKES die Circusschule eV is a circus school and circus arts education center located in Bremen, in the Huckelriede district. For many years, the association has been developing artistic, educational, and social activities around circus arts for children, teenagers, and families.
Since 2020, JOKES has had a dedicated circus site located on Kornstraße in Bremen. This space includes a two-pole big top, circus caravans, outdoor areas for movement, and several spaces for workshops, equipment storage, and props. This location allows the association to offer circus arts education activities throughout the year.
The school welcomes a particularly large number of participants. Approximately 260 children and teenagers who are members of the association participate each week in the activities offered by JOKES. In addition, more than 300 children and teenagers are supported each week through projects carried out directly within schools.
The youngest children can start from age 4 in the Mini Circus groups. They discover the circus in a fun way through games and different activities such as the trapeze, tightrope walking, balance ball, scarf juggling, hula-hoop or acrobatics.
For children aged 6 to 10 , several Kinder Circus groups allow them to progressively develop their skills in various techniques. Participants can practice tightrope walking, trapeze, unicycle riding, balance ball, rola-bola, juggling, aerial silks, and different forms of acrobatics.
The Circus Kids groups then welcome young people aged approximately 10 to 12. Participants continue to explore all the circus arts while having the opportunity to dedicate more time to their favorite disciplines. This structure allows everyone to progress according to their desires and skill level while maintaining a strong group dynamic.
From the age of 12 or 13 , courses specifically designed for teenagers allow them to delve deeper into the sport. Some groups focus on acrobatics and aerial disciplines, while others develop juggling skills. External instructors are regularly invited to offer specialized workshops and broaden the artistic opportunities available to young people.
JOKES also places great importance on creation and performance . Teenagers participate in the design of shows and productions that can then be presented at festivals and various cultural events. These creations combine several disciplines such as acrobatics, aerial silks, trapeze, diabolo, and unicycle, allowing young artists to develop genuine stage experience.
The school also offers open training sessions , holiday workshops , family projects , and various one-off activities to discover circus arts. Some initiatives directly involve parents and children in acrobatics and other circus practices.
Beyond learning techniques, JOKES uses circus arts as a genuine educational and social tool . Group practice fosters mutual support, self-confidence, creativity, responsibility, and cooperation. The varying skill levels also allow children to help each other and learn from one another.
The association works closely with several schools in Bremen and also develops social and cultural projects for local residents. Its site in Huckelriede is therefore not only a circus school, but also a meeting place for children, teenagers, and families.
With several hundred young participants each week, a course program ranging from initiation for 4-year-olds to advanced groups for teenagers, a real permanent big top and a strong activity in schools, JOKES die Circusschule is today one of the important structures for circus education for young people in Bremen.
