Mimulus is a circus school, a professional company, and a cultural venue located in Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, in the Sarthe region of France. Founded in 1981, the association initially developed its activities in Le Mans before touring France in a caravan. It settled in Fresnay-sur-Sarthe in 2002 and now welcomes audiences under a 700 m² semi-rigid big top located in the Place de la Gare (Station Square).
Mimulus Circus School is first and foremost a recreational school. Its educational approach doesn't focus on performance for its own sake, but rather prioritizes the enjoyment of the activity , progress, and personal development. Classes are adapted to different ages and skill levels to make circus arts accessible to as many people as possible. Instruction is provided by qualified instructors , and the school is affiliated with and accredited by the FFEC (French Federation of Circus Schools).
The educational offering is particularly rich.
This wide variety of equipment allows students to experiment with several families of disciplines before gradually delving deeper into those that best match their desires and abilities.
For the 2026-2027 season, Mimulus welcomes families with young children as well as children, teenagers, adults, and seniors. Family workshops allow children under 6 to practice with a parent. A second class is offered for families with children over 8 who wish to continue practicing together.
Mimulus also offers " Artistic Tracks ," a weekly two-hour workshop that delves deeper into the artistic dimension of circus arts. This program complements technical training by emphasizing creation and the development of stage presence.
The school regularly organizes training courses during school holidays. These can be multidisciplinary, geared towards skill development, or dedicated to aerial disciplines. Specific courses are also offered to older teenagers and adults.
Mimulus' educational dimension extends far beyond the classes offered under the big top. The association develops significant activities with schools, leisure centers, socio-cultural organizations, and specialized institutions.
For schools, Mimulus offers, among other things, genuine discovery classes. The association can set up its traveling big top right next to the school to immerse children in the world of the circus. Students can then gradually move from the role of spectator to that of participant and performer.
A " Day at the Circus " package also allows classes to come directly to the big top in Fresnay-sur-Sarthe. The day combines a show, circus arts practice, and various discovery activities.
The interventions can take place under the big top in Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, directly in the partner structure or under the Mimulus travelling big top.
The diversity of the people served is an important characteristic of the project. Mimulus works with everyone from daycare centers to retirement homes and collaborates with leisure centers, socio-cultural organizations, childminder networks, and specialized institutions.
Circus arts can thus be adapted to the abilities and objectives of extremely different audiences, making Mimulus an actor in arts education, touring and access to circus practices in rural areas.
Mimulus also has a professional company. Its artists offer acts and entertainment featuring juggling, balance ball, cigar box juggling, Chinese pole, balancing, and acrobatics. Strolling performances on stilts or with a large balance ball are also available.
The company also has its own shows. " The Demo " takes the form of a burlesque and participatory lecture of about 45 minutes during which two characters introduce the public to different facets of circus arts.
The presence of this professional company within the same association helps to create bridges between teaching, creation, live performance and amateur practice.
Mimulus develops a true cultural season under its big top. The venue hosts professional shows and various events throughout the year, giving students and local residents regular access to live performance.
The students themselves participate in this artistic dimension. The Fête des Drilles (Festival of the Drills) is notably the school's end-of-year event. In 2026, three different shows were presented by student groups throughout the day, accompanied by musical entertainment.
The association is an active member of the federal network of circus schools. It is a member of FREC Atlantique and holds FFEC accreditation no. 72075. Fresnay-sur-Sarthe also hosted the Regional Circus School Meetings in 2024.
Mimulus is a particularly comprehensive organization: a recreational school, a place for family and intergenerational activities, workshops, school projects, programs for specialized institutions, a traveling big top, a professional company, and a cultural program are all brought together within a single project. With over forty years of history and a permanent presence in Fresnay-sur-Sarthe since 2002, Mimulus now plays a significant role in the transmission and dissemination of circus arts in the Sarthe region and, more broadly, in the rural area of the Alpes Mancelles.
Under its big top, as well as during its traveling performances, the association upholds a simple principle: circus arts should be accessible to everyone . Children, teenagers, families, adults, seniors, schoolchildren, and people in specialized institutions can thus discover circus arts in an environment where pleasure, learning, and personal development take precedence over the pursuit of performance.
