NOA – Núcleo de Oportunidades Artísticas is a space for artistic creation, training, and practice located in Castêlo da Maia, in the municipality of Maia, near Porto. The project was created by the artist and entrepreneur Bruno Leite , who is also the director of Mr. Milk – Espetáculos e Eventos .

NOA was born from the desire to make different forms of artistic expression accessible to the local community. Its activities mainly revolve around circus , theatre and other performing arts disciplines.

Circus arts, the heart of the project

Circus arts occupy a particularly important place in the project. NOA offers a multidisciplinary approach allowing participants to discover several families of techniques rather than focusing on a single specialty.

Juggling

Juggling is one of the disciplines offered. It allows students to progressively develop coordination , precision , concentration and mastery of different objects.

Balance techniques

Balance techniques constitute another area of practice. They allow one to work on posture , body control and the ability to control one's body and different apparatus in unusual situations.

Magic

Magic is also integrated into the educational and artistic universe of NOA. It brings a different dimension to purely physical disciplines and allows work on precision of movement , presentation , staging and relationship with the public .

Contortion

Contortion is one of the circus techniques mentioned in the space's offerings. His work is part of the general physical approach developed within the project and complements the acrobatic and aerial disciplines.

Aerial disciplines

Aerial disciplines constitute one of the important aspects of the teaching offered by the NOA. Several apparatuses characteristic of aerial circus can be practiced there.

Vertical fabric

The vertical fabric allows, in particular, the discovery of work in suspension , ascents , positions and the different possibilities of movement offered by a textile apparatus.

Aerial rope

Aerial rope complements this approach by offering a different way of working on holds , suspensions , movements and body control at height.

Trapeze

The trapeze is also among the disciplines announced by the NOA. This iconic circus apparatus allows for the exploration of different positions , balances and movements in suspension .

Aerial hoop (lira)

The aerial hoop, or lira, complements this offering. Practitioners can discover different positions inside, around and under the apparatus and gradually learn to link them in sequences.

This diversity allows students to discover several disciplines and possibly identify those that best match their abilities and desires .

The clown and the theatre

The clown also occupies an important place in the identity of NOA. The project therefore does not consider the circus solely from an acrobatic or technical perspective, but also gives importance to the character , the performance and the relationship with the audience .

Training courses specifically dedicated to clowning have been organized in the space. They allow participants to explore character development , emotional states , comic performance , and various techniques related to stage presence .

Theatre naturally complements this approach. It allows participants to work on physical expression , interpretation , imagination , and the ability to perform in front of an audience.

This encounter between theatre and circus is one of the characteristics of NOA. Several creations developed in the space directly combine theatrical performance and circus techniques.

A place for creation and performance

The project therefore does not function solely as a place to learn figures. The various techniques are also used as creative material and can be integrated into performances.

The NOA also has its own performance space. Shows aimed particularly at children and families are organized there throughout the year.

This regular presence on stage gives educational activities an added dimension. Students can discover that circus techniques take on their full meaning when integrated into an artistic intention and presented before an audience.

Workshops and training sessions

The space also develops workshops and training courses dedicated to different disciplines. These events allow participants to complement their classes and occasionally discover new techniques or work with different instructors.

Some courses are offered in post-professional hours , allowing adults in particular to access artistic activities after their workday.

Children and families also occupy an important place in the project. Part of the space and programming has been specifically designed to welcome younger children and develop their access to artistic practices.

The NOA also has a garden and various spaces for organizing activities, meetings and events beyond just classrooms.

A key player in local cultural life

NOA's artistic activities extend beyond the school walls. The organization also participates in cultural events held in the Maia region.

She has notably been present at the Festival Internacional de Teatro Cómico da Maia with creations blending circus arts, theatre and family entertainment.

This participation in local cultural events allows practitioners and creations from NOA to meet an external audience and integrates the project into the cultural life of the community.

The link with Mr. Milk – Spectacles and Events

The connection with Mr. Milk – Espetáculos e Eventos is also important. This company, founded by Bruno Leite, develops professional shows and entertainment in the field of contemporary circus and event production.

The close relationship between teaching activity and show production allows NOA to maintain a direct link with the professional world of performing arts, even if the courses offered by the space do not themselves constitute a professional diploma training.

The philosophy of the project

The philosophy of the project is based on the idea of making original artistic experiences accessible and allowing the public to discover in concrete terms the disciplines that they can usually observe in shows.

Juggling, magic, balancing, contortion, vertical fabric, rope, trapeze, aerial hoop, clown and theatre make up a particularly diverse program.

This versatility makes NOA an interesting place to discover the circus in its entirety. Physical , technical , theatrical , and creative dimensions can all come together in a single experience.

NOA – Núcleo de Oportunidades Artísticas thus constitutes a space for discovery, practice and creation around circus and performing arts in Maia. Through its courses, workshops, training and shows, the project helps to make circus practices accessible to children, young people, adults and families in the region.
