An important school for amateur practice

Amateur cycling is one of the cornerstones of Piste d'Azur. The club offers approximately 75 hours of weekly lessons from September to July, primarily held in La Roquette-sur-Siagne and Nice, and welcomes nearly 400 students aged 2 to 65. It also organizes around twenty training camps per year, attracting over 150 additional participants.

This diversity allows children to discover the circus arts from early childhood and then continue practicing them throughout childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Different groups and levels allow learning to be adapted to each individual's age, experience, and desires.

Piste d'Azur also offers activities in Nice, at the Espace Magnan. Classes are taught by Piste d'Azur instructors and are available for children from 4 years old , including object balancing, unicycling, juggling, and acrobatics.

Key figures

Key figures for amateur practice and local action:

  • ~75 hours of classes per week (September–July)
  • ~400 students aged 2 to 65 years
  • ~20 training courses per year (+150 participants)
  • Activities offered in Nice (Espace Magnan)
  • Interventions in 15 municipalities and 25 schools

These figures show the extent of Piste d'Azur's work in the region and the diversity of the audiences welcomed.

A multidisciplinary practice of the circus

The curriculum covers a wide range of circus disciplines. The school's programs and presentations of student work highlight the following elements:

  • Acrobatics
  • Juggling
  • Trampoline
  • Unicycle
  • Aerial disciplines
  • Chinese pole
  • Balances on objects

The center also has equipment allowing for more specific practices, such as the flying trapeze , which is notably offered to the public during certain events organized by Piste d'Azur.

The aim is both to develop technical and physical skills and to allow participants to discover the artistic dimension of the circus. Students may thus be encouraged to create acts and present their work to an audience.

Internships during the holidays

In addition to year-round classes, Piste d'Azur organizes numerous circus workshops during school holidays and some weekends. These workshops cater to different age groups.

  • Early learning workshops for 4-6 year olds
  • Circus workshops for 7-12 year olds
  • Internships up to age 15
  • Formats dedicated to specific disciplines (e.g., trapeze, juggling, trampoline)

These courses allow you to discover the circus for the first time as well as to take advantage of the holidays to practice more intensively.

Arts and cultural education

Piste d'Azur develops a particularly important activity in the field of Arts and Cultural Education (EAC) . The center works with nurseries, networks of childminders, preschools, primary schools, middle schools and high schools.

Projects can take the form of artistic workshops, field trips, or programs specifically developed with schools. These initiatives extend well beyond La Roquette-sur-Siagne: Piste d'Azur reports working in 15 municipalities and 25 schools , reaching over a thousand students in the Pays de Grasse region and more broadly in the Alpes-Maritimes department.

The circus thus becomes a true educational tool allowing children and teenagers to discover live performance while experiencing different disciplines themselves.

A school geared towards professionalization

Piste d'Azur also has a significant professional training program in circus arts and welcomes French and international students. The organization has been a member of FEDEC – the European Federation of Professional Circus Schools – since 2004, where it is notably recognized as a preparatory school.

Two major artistic pathways allow young people to embark on a professional career.

Preparation for higher education in circus arts

An initial training program prepares students for entrance exams to higher circus arts schools in France and abroad. It is aimed at young people aged 16 to 21 who already have proven experience in acrobatics, circus arts, or other artistic disciplines.

The training is intensive, with approximately 1,225 hours of instruction per year. It combines acrobatic and physical preparation, in-depth study of circus specialties, contemporary dance, classical dance, acting, creative writing, music, English, circus history, safety and rigging, as well as professional simulations.

The objective is therefore to prepare candidates technically for competitions while developing their personality and artistic potential.

Training program for "Circus and Movement Artists"

Piste d'Azur also offers a two-year professional training program for those wishing to prepare directly for a career as a circus artist. It is open to applicants aged 16 and over, subject to selection, and leads to the Level 5 professional certification "Circus and Movement Artist".

Training content and objectives

General organization and objectives:

  • Year 1: General training to improve physical fitness and acrobatic skills, confirm a circus specialty, and develop artistic potential
  • 2nd year: advanced technical and artistic training, creation of an act or a professional project to facilitate integration
  • Practical and theoretical instruction supplemented by internships and professional simulations.

The training aims at professional integration by combining technical know-how, artistic development and transversal knowledge.

  • Physical and acrobatic preparation
  • Circus specialties
  • Contemporary and classical dance
  • Play, creative writing, music
  • Anatomy, physiology, nutrition
  • Management, legislation, communication
  • Safety and rigging

Piste d'Azur is also part of the ProCirk network, alongside Arc en Cirque, CADC Balthazar and CRAC de Lomme.

A pedagogy open to contemporary circus

The professional educational program asserts both a commitment to the history of the circus and an openness to the evolution of contemporary circus. The circular ring and the big top are considered important elements of this culture, but the teaching also incorporates new forms of expression and artistic cross-pollination.

Circus techniques are thus complemented by contemporary and classical dance, acting, writing, and music. The training also places significant emphasis on the artist's personality, self-awareness, and the development of a unique artistic identity.

Links with the professional environment

Students in training develop in an environment directly connected to the professional world. Piste d'Azur maintains partnerships with companies, higher education institutions, venues for creation and performance, as well as with the Rosella Hightower Higher School of Dance in Cannes.

Trainees also attend shows and festivals as part of their training in order to develop their knowledge of the professional sector and contemporary circus.

Artist residencies and support

Piste d'Azur is also a residency, hosting, and support space for artists and circus companies. This activity allows artists to have spaces to develop their creations while promoting their integration into the local community.

It also directly benefits students: amateurs and future professionals alike can be in regular contact with working artists. The boundary between school and professional space thus becomes intentionally permeable, allowing practitioners to discover how an artistic project is actually developed.

The La Piste au Soleil festival

One of the major events at Piste d'Azur is the La Piste au Soleil festival, which has been organized for over fifteen years. This highlight brings together amateur students, vocational students, schools, established and emerging professional artists, and the general public.

  • Student presentations and professional performances
  • Creations by former students
  • Introductory sessions and activities (juggling, trampoline, flying trapeze, etc.)

The festival particularly illustrates the Piste d'Azur project: to create encounters between learning, amateur practice, professional training, creation and live performance.

A true living space centered around the circus

Piste d'Azur therefore does not define itself solely as a school. The center seeks to create a true living space around circus arts, allowing different audiences to meet around a class, a show, a residency, an activity or an event.

With nearly 400 amateur students , its professional training courses, its interventions in schools, its internships, its artist residencies and its festival, Piste d'Azur plays an important role in the transmission and development of circus arts in the Alpes-Maritimes and in the PACA region.
