The Polichinelle Circus School is a circus school in the province of Liège, developing its activities mainly in Liège and Seraing . It is an initiative of the Centre de Jeunes du Parc de Seraing ASBL and is part of the Fédécirque network, which brings together the main circus schools of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

The school welcomes a particularly wide audience since activities start from the age of 4 and continue throughout childhood and adolescence, with opportunities for adults to practice as well.

Circummotor skills for the youngest children

For the youngest children, the discovery begins with circus-based motor skills. This initial approach allows them to use movement and situations inspired by circus arts to progressively develop motor skills , coordination , balance , and body awareness .

Children can then join multidisciplinary circus workshops . Organised by age group, these workshops allow them to discover several major families of circus arts and to gradually acquire the technical basics necessary to continue their practice.

Juggling

Juggling is one of the historical pillars of Polichinelle's teaching. Practitioners discover different forms of object manipulation that allow them to work on coordination , precision , rhythm , concentration and perseverance .

School activities include, among other things, the manipulation of scarves , balls , rings , clubs , Chinese plates and diabolos .

The balances

Balance sports are also widely represented. Participants can discover pedal boats , rola-bola , stilts and unicycles .

These disciplines help develop balance , positioning , coordination , and confidence in one's own abilities . They also require perseverance and concentration to gradually progress through the different learning stages.

Acrobatics

Acrobatics is another major family of techniques covered at Polichinelle. It allows students to better understand their bodies, their points of support, and their movement possibilities.

Aerial disciplines

Aerial disciplines now occupy an important place in the program. Several workshops specifically dedicated to aerial arts allow young practitioners to deepen their knowledge of these techniques beyond the introductory courses offered in multidisciplinary classes.

This organization therefore allows students to start with a general practice and then, for some students, to move towards more specialized workshops.

Stage performance and collective creation

Stage performance complements technical learning. Circus is not considered solely as a physical activity: participants are also encouraged to reflect on how their skills can be used to express themselves in front of an audience.

Teenagers have access to creative and advanced workshops . These groups allow them to deepen their technical skills while further developing the artistic and collective dimension of the practice.

Collective creation is indeed one of the important objectives of the educational project. The school seeks to teach participants to work together and build collectively rather than focusing solely on their individual progress.

The educational project

Polichinelle's project makes broader use of circus arts as tools for expression . The practice aims to foster body awareness, develop artistic imagination, and encourage personal expression.

Self-confidence and personal growth also play an important role. The technical difficulties encountered during the learning process allow one to learn to persevere and gradually recognize one's own progress.

The collective dimension is just as important. The workshops provide spaces where participants learn to work together, respect others, and contribute to a shared project.

Open training and training camps

For teenagers and adults who already possess a certain level of independence, the Polichinelle Circus School also offers drop-in and open training periods. These allow participants to work on the disciplines of their choice at their own pace.

In addition to the annual workshops, the school organizes courses during school holidays . These courses offer a multidisciplinary introduction to or further exploration of circus arts.

Juggling, balancing, aerial techniques, acrobatics and stagecraft can be associated with group games , body awareness work and collective creations .

External interventions

The Polichinelle Circus School also operates outside its own workshops. It participates in projects in schools and various organizations in the Liège region.

During these sessions, children can discover juggling , balance , plate spinning , diabolo , and unicycle skills. The circus thus becomes an educational tool, allowing them to simultaneously develop motor skills , concentration , perseverance , and cooperation .

A long-standing regional presence

The Polichinelle Circus School has a long history in the Seraing region. The archives of the Seraing Park Youth Centre show that activities organised under this name had already existed for many years within the youth centre.

Today a member of Fédécirque , Polichinelle continues its project between Liège and Seraing by combining discovery , technical learning , specialization , autonomous practice and creation .

Thanks to its workshops from age 4, its multidisciplinary courses, its aerial specializations, its creative groups, its training for teenagers and adults and its internships, the Polichinelle Circus School constitutes an important structure for the amateur practice of circus arts in the Liège area.
