Historical Heritage and Engineering
Cigar box juggling has a rich tradition, from Cinquevalli and Salerno to W.C. Fields, who was a true master of the art. However, traditional methods had their limitations…
Albert Moreira , founder of the renowned Los Gatos Trio and mentor to his son Albert Lucas Moreira , always admired the discipline but criticized the impractical square shape of older boxes. Through discussions with renowned artists such as Bela Kremo and Francis Brunn, he accumulated valuable insights which he passed on to his son, known for his famous "Albert Throws" and organizer of the Lucas Cup within the IJA.
With the participation of Niels Duinker – an engineer by training and creator of numerous juggling accessories such as Bottle Clubs and the Cuphead 2.0 – and Will Oltman for the engineering side, this project came to fruition: a redesigned, modernized, and optimized cigar box. The Moreira box is the culmination of this vision: a tool for modern jugglers, combining ergonomics, aesthetics, and robustness.
Learning and Video Tutorials
Here's a beginner-level tutorial on cigar boxes by Niels Duinker. The tutorial is in English, but the pictures speak for themselves!
Niels Duinker offers an introduction to cigar box juggling. He begins by explaining the importance of posture, emphasizing keeping the back straight and coordinating arm, leg, and back movements for fluid motion. The tutorial uses three classic boxes, and the first trick covered is the "180° spin," which involves rotating one outer box while keeping the other two in place. He guides the viewer step by step through the movements, demonstrating the precise gestures to adopt.
The rest of the video introduces other fundamental moves such as the "takeout," where the middle box is removed while all three are in the air, and the "tumble over," a takeout variation where one box rotates as it falls. Niels compares some of the sequences to three-ball juggling to make them easier to understand. He encourages viewers to practice regularly to improve.
Historical Demonstration by Niels Duinker
Short demonstration video of boxes. The video does not use the boxes shown on this page because it was filmed before those boxes existed!
Important information about stacking boxes
This box is not designed for box stacking; its shape is not suitable for this practice. ND boxes are optimized for handling 3 and 4 boxes, with a unique shape focused on hand comfort and control during juggling. The ergonomic curved shape works very well for this (also for people with small hands, such as children and many women). For stacking tricks, especially with a large number of boxes, a straighter, more rigid design is necessary to keep the stack stable and prevent wobbling. For stacking, consider Henrys boxes instead.
