In Difference is a powerful and sensitive contemporary circus creation conceived and performed by Marica Marinoni and Jef Everaert, two internationally renowned artists specializing in Cyr wheel. Produced by Cirq'ônflex, this show explores with rare intensity human relationships, difference, communication, and how two individuals can learn to evolve together without relinquishing their uniqueness.

On stage, Jef and Marica find themselves confronted with their differences, their ways of thinking, feeling, and perceiving the world. Their duo seems incapable of finding a true point of equilibrium. Too different to harmonize naturally, yet too connected to ignore each other, they move within a space where every movement becomes an attempt at dialogue. Their encounter is built as much on tensions as on moments of connection, on falls as on surges of energy.

At the heart of this relationship lies an imposing iron wheel, a veritable third protagonist in the performance. Simultaneously a fault line, a border, a playground, and a meeting point, it becomes the medium for all transformations. The two artists cross paths on it, confront each other, support each other, fall together, get back up, and begin again tirelessly. This apparatus becomes a language in its own right, revealing emotions, misunderstandings, and moments of connection without a single word being spoken.

Through a demanding choreographic style blending Cyr wheel, acrobatics, balance, dance, and physical theatre, the bodies seek to invent a common language, devoid of rules and grammar. Each figure, each suspension, each imbalance, and each impulse fuels a highly intense physical dialogue, as metaphorical as it is abstract. Difference is never presented as an obstacle to overcome, but as a creative richness, a strength that nourishes the relationship and allows for the evolution of both characters.

In Difference delicately explores several universal questions: what does it mean to be two without seeking to become one? Can we coexist without constant compromise, without merging, without hierarchy? How do we build a relationship when each person fully retains their identity? Rather than providing answers, the performance chooses to experience them on stage, inviting each spectator to interpret this encounter according to their own sensibility.

Both performers have exceptional artistic backgrounds. Marica Marinoni, born in Milan in 1995, competed in trampoline for seven years before turning to drawing, illustration, and art history. Discovering the Cyr wheel in Turin transformed her academic path and led her to join the prestigious 31st graduating class of the CNAC (National Center for Circus Arts), from which she graduated in 2019. Since then, she has collaborated with companies such as Scom and Les Filles du Renard Pâle, while also creating her solo piece Lontano, co-written with Juan Ignacio Tula.

Jef Everaert, born in Belgium in 1999 into a family of scientists and musicians, discovered circus arts at a very young age, alongside playing the violin and drums. Passionate about the Cyr wheel since his teens, he continued his training at the Louvain Circus School and then at the FLIC School in Turin, before joining the 34th graduating class of the CNAC (National Circus Arts Centre). He completed his studies in 2022 with the graduation show Balestra, directed by the Rasposo company, led by Marie Molliens.

The two artists met in 2018 during a workshop Marica led at the Turin Circus School. Although their backgrounds were similar, they each developed a highly personal approach to the Cyr wheel. Over the years, their shared fascination with this apparatus and their differences in thought, culture, and movement became the starting point for a profound artistic exploration. After Jef graduated from school, they decided to create their first show together as co-creators, giving birth to In Difference.

The creation benefits from a renowned artistic team with the collaboration of Juan Ignacio Tula and Francesco Sgrò, the dramaturgical support of Alexander Vantournhout, Marie Ballet and Guillaume Servely, a lighting design by Bernard Revel, a sound design by Francesco Sgrò, costumes made by Iorhanne Da Cunha and Emma Assaud, while the production is ensured by Joséphine Théoleyre and Manon Gagnepain, and the distribution by Charlotte Blin.

Produced by Cirq'ônflex, In Difference is the result of a significant network of co-productions and residencies involving numerous leading contemporary circus organizations, including Le Prato, CIRCA, Les 2 Scènes, Le Théâtre de Mâcon, L'Arc, Les Scènes du Jura, Les Transversales, La Brèche, Le PALC, Archaos, Latitude 50, CIRKLABO, FLIC Torino, and the CNAC. The show is also a Circusnext 2025 laureate, supported by Territoires de Cirque, the DRAC Bourgogne–Franche-Comté, the Bourgogne–Franche-Comté Region, and the Quint'Est network.

Following a successful initial run in Europe, In Difference continues its 2026-2027 tour with numerous performances in France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. The schedule is still being finalized, and new dates will be added to this international tour, allowing audiences to discover a work where circus virtuosity serves a profoundly human reflection on difference, encounter, and the richness of our individualities.
