Enter a world where objects seem to have a will of their own with "Quand ça lâche" (When It Gives Up), the new creation by juggler and object manipulator Johan Stockmar, founder of Compagnie Cirque Emboîté. Presented from November 13 to 18, 2026 at Studio Zéro of the Fratellini Academy in La Plaine Saint-Denis, this 50-minute contemporary circus show, suitable for ages 6 and up, invites young and old to discover an adventure that is as funny as it is poetic, where gravity, chance, and imagination become the true directors.
On a stage filled with a strange accumulation of stacked boxes, a solitary figure enters. He approaches this mysterious world with curiosity, convinced he can easily take control. But very quickly, the objects seem to resist him. The boxes slide, tip, balance, fall, or come to life as if they possessed a will of their own. Each attempt at control triggers a new, unexpected reaction, transforming the slightest gesture into a series of comical and surprising situations.
Through clown-inspired gestures and meticulous object manipulation, Johan Stockmar creates a constant dialogue between humans and matter. Juggling transcends mere technical demonstration, becoming a true theatrical language where each box acquires a personality, a presence, and a role in the narrative. The laws of gravity become a partner in the performance, giving rise to a vibrant scenography where balance is constantly challenged.
When It Gives Up is the natural extension of the piece If It Falls, created in 2023 as part of Johan Stockmar's training at the Fratellini Academy. This first short piece, twelve minutes long, presented notably at the 43rd edition of the Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain, allowed him to explore the narrative possibilities offered by cigar boxes, an emblematic discipline of contemporary juggling. With this new creation, the artist fully develops this universe and pushes his exploration of the relationship between humans and objects even further.
At the heart of Cirque Emboîté's artistic approach lies a fascination with the simple mechanisms that govern our world. Here, there is no artificial intelligence or sophisticated technology: it is the laws of physics, precarious balances, mechanical movements, and gravity that give life to objects. Johan Stockmar imagines a world where matter seems to possess a true personality, capable of conversing with its manipulator, resisting them, surprising them, and sometimes even surpassing them.
The artist aims to create a world where objects become true partners on stage. Boxes are no longer mere juggling props but genuine characters capable of evoking emotion, laughter, surprise, or tenderness. This original approach transforms everyday gestures into extraordinary moments and invites the audience to see even the most ordinary objects in a new light.
Driven by refined visual storytelling, Quand ça lâche blends humor, poetry, and technical virtuosity. Children marvel at the improbable situations that unfold, while adults appreciate the subtlety of the choreography, the precision of the juggling, and the multiple layers of interpretation offered by the performance. With few or no words, the story is told primarily through movement, the reactions of objects, silences, and glances, making the show universal and accessible to all.
This creation is presented as part of "Et moi alors?", the young audience season of the Théâtre Gérard Philipe – Centre dramatique national de Saint-Denis and the City of Saint-Denis, as well as on the occasion of La Nuit du Cirque, an unmissable event celebrating each year the richness and diversity of contemporary circus arts.
The creation of Quand ça lâche is the result of a significant collaborative effort involving numerous artists and technicians. Johan Stockmar wrote the script, designed the set, and performed. He was joined by Aedín Walsh as an outside eye and director, Juliette Dubernet as stage manager, Cécile Conte as general stage manager and set design assistant, Laurent Gauthier for set engineering, Maurizio Moretti (Atelier MC93) for set construction, Hector Lemerle for lighting design, Julie Mondor and Marie Rabatti for sound design, Fanny Gautreau for costumes, Béné Borth as an outside eye for juggling, Natacha Ferrer for production, distribution, and administration, Colin Meillier (Association Roue Libre) for administration, and Mie Jakobsen, who created the show's illustrations.
The show is co-produced by PERPLX (Belgium), La Maison des Jonglages in Bondy and Dynamo – Workspace for Circus and Performing Arts (Denmark). Its creation benefited from artistic residencies at PERPLX, La Maison des Jonglages, Dynamo, Latitude 50 (Belgium), the Fratellini Academy, Archaos – Pôle National Cirque de Marseille as well as the Château de Monthelon – Atelier de fabrique artistique, all of which supported the development of this creation.
