Grand Flying Trapeze at CIAM in Aix-en-Provence – Courses, workshops and professional training

Take to the skies with the Grand Flying Trapeze School at CIAM, the International Center for Movement Arts in Aix-en-Provence. Located in a facility specially designed for this spectacular discipline, the school welcomes both those wishing to discover the flying trapeze and experienced practitioners and artists seeking to refine their technique in a professional setting.

The Flying Trapeze is a team sport combining aerial acrobatics, precision, confidence, and coordination. Guided by a specialized teaching team, participants gradually learn to launch themselves from the platform, master aerial maneuvers, and practice transitions with a partner. Instruction is tailored to each individual's level, from the first swings to the most advanced technical and artistic sequences.

Weekly classes for different levels

For the 2025-2026 season, regular classes begin the week of October 6, 2025, and end the week of June 6, 2026. No classes are held during school holidays or public holidays. The 2025-2026 season is fully booked.

Three weekly two-hour slots are offered:

Wednesdays from 8:15 p.m. to 10:15 p.m., for beginner and intermediate practitioners, with no minimum level required;
Fridays from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., for intermediate and advanced levels, with the ability to perform a safe catch without a tether;
Saturdays from 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., from age 12 and for all levels.

The annual fee shown is €499, excluding CIAM membership.

Workshops to discover or deepen your knowledge of the Flying Trapeze

In addition to year-round classes, CIAM regularly organizes Flying Trapeze workshops during school holidays and some weekends. These sessions offer the opportunity to discover the discipline, review the fundamentals, or perfect figures, takeoffs from the platform, landings, and working with the base.

Practice weekends are offered monthly for adults. Workshops held during school holidays are open to those aged 12 and over, while weekend adult workshops are generally open to those aged 15 and over. Sessions are tailored to different skill levels, from complete beginners to more experienced trapeze artists.

An installation entirely dedicated to the Big Flyer

CIAM has a Grand Flying Trapeze structure that allows for practice in conditions adapted to learning, training, and artistic creation. The installation includes a starting platform, trapezes, a large landing net, and the safety equipment necessary for the progression of flyers and bases.

This setup allows for the exploration of all aspects of the discipline: mounting the platform, swinging, performing tricks, releasing, catching, lungeing, returns, and group sequences. Safety, communication, and trust among participants are essential to the teaching approach.

A specialized teaching team

The teaching is led by Jan Van Zyl, a Grand Volant specialist with over forty years of experience, and Karen Richard. Their approach combines technical instruction, individualized guidance, and artistic exploration to allow each participant to progress at their own pace.

A unique professional training program in France

CIAM also offers the professional training course "Techniques and interpretation of the arts of the Grand Volant", presented as the only French professional training course entirely devoted to the flying trapeze and the Grand Volant.

Led by Jan Van Zyl, this training program is designed for both aerialists and bases who wish to consolidate their technical skills and develop a genuine artistic approach. It alternates between technical instruction, intensive training, interpretation, personal research, and creative projects.

The process takes place in two stages:

a first module of 110 hours, devoted to technical fundamentals;
an in-depth course of 355 hours, allowing the development of technical skills and artistic interpretation.

For the 2026-2027 session, the first period is scheduled from November 16 to December 18, 2026. The complete program runs from November 16, 2026 to April 2, 2027. Auditions and selections are organized between June and October 2026, with classes starting on Monday, November 16, 2026.

The training is Qualiopi certified and may be eligible for funding depending on the candidate's professional situation and available funding mechanisms.
