Hyperboles – A contemporary circus and skateboarding performance by Compagnie SCoM

Hyperboles is the new creation from Compagnie SCoM – Coline Garcia, a contemporary circus work that combines acrobatics, skateboarding, and live music in a show that is as spectacular as it is socially conscious. Created in 2027, this project brings together eight women on stage – four acrobats and four skateboarders – accompanied by a musician, to create a shared language where physical virtuosity becomes a true means of artistic expression.

By blending two disciplines that share many similarities—a taste for risk, balance, mastery of falls, precision of movement, pushing one's limits, and creativity—Hyperboles offers a reflection on the place of women in worlds long considered masculine. The performance explores how they inhabit, transform, and reinvent space, both in the street and on the stage.

The production is led by Coline Garcia, who is responsible for the concept, set design, and direction. For several years, Compagnie SCoM has been developing an artistic practice focused on gender equality, the representation of bodies, and the renewal of contemporary circus arts. With Hyperboles, this approach takes on a new dimension by bringing circus arts into dialogue with skateboard culture.

The show emerged from extensive research conducted between France and Brazil. Several artistic workshops brought together French and Brazilian circus artists, as well as skateboarders from diverse cultural backgrounds. This research drew inspiration from the Brazilian women's skateboarding scene and the renowned ImillaSkate of Bolivia, whose photographs by Luisa Dörr inspired the project's visual universe.

On stage, the eight performers develop a choreographic style built around flight, sliding, imbalances, falls, and mutual trust. Skateboards become veritable circus apparatus, while acrobatics draw on the energy of urban sports to create a unique vocabulary where each movement tells the story of a conquest of space.

To develop this unique style, Coline Garcia collaborated with choreographer Pierre Rigal and playwright Alice Carré, whose theatrical background informs a profound reflection on the dramaturgy of movement, the composition of space, and how to evoke meaning without relying on text. Together, they create a work where physical feats serve a sensitive and deeply human purpose.

The cast includes Constanza Nazal, Violeta Martinez, Margaux Lissandre, and Camille Chamoulaud in acrobatics; Amandine Moreau, Laurène Begaud, Melissa Orvat, and Lucie Curutchet on skateboards; and musician Selma Namata Doyen. The set design is by Vincent Gadras, the lighting design by Elsa Revol, the sound design by Lola Etieve, the set construction by Pierre Pailles, the costumes by Noëlle Camus, the lighting operation by Justine Angevin, and the stage management by Fanny Hugo.

Hyperboles premiered on January 28, 2027, at the Marseille International Circus Arts Biennial (BIAC), before touring numerous iconic venues of contemporary French circus. The show was notably presented at the MAIN-TENANT Festival – Festival de Cirque d'Aujourd'hui in Amiens, alongside many cultural partners in the metropolitan area, and then at the Maison de la Danse in Lyon as part of the utoPistes festival.

Lasting approximately one hour, Hyperboles is aimed at a wide audience (ages 10 and up in Amiens, ages 8 and up in Lyon) and will appeal to contemporary circus enthusiasts as well as skateboarders, dancers, and urban culture aficionados. Blending impressive physical performances, live music, choreographic exploration, and social commentary, Compagnie SCoM presents an ambitious creation where the power of the collective becomes a true celebration of freedom, audacity, and female empowerment.
