For over half a century, the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival has showcased the circus arts worldwide and established itself as the undisputed benchmark for traditional circus. Founded in 1974 at the initiative of Prince Rainier III of Monaco to support circus families and promote excellence in the performing arts, the festival is now presided over by HSH Princess Stéphanie of Monaco, who is personally involved in selecting artists, designing shows, and preserving circus traditions. A true international showcase, the Monte-Carlo Festival welcomes the world's greatest artists each year and awards the prestigious Gold, Silver, and Bronze Clowns, prizes considered the most coveted distinctions in contemporary circus.
The 49th Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival will take place from January 22nd to 31st, 2027, under the famous Big Top in Fontvieille, in the Principality of Monaco. For ten days, spectators can enjoy a succession of shows featuring the best international acts of acrobatics, aerial work, trapeze, contortion, juggling, balancing, aerial disciplines, animal training, clowning, and major attractions from all corners of the world. As every year, the festival will be accompanied by the 14th edition of New Generation, an international competition designed to discover the young artists who will represent the future of the world circus.
The program is structured around several performance formats to allow the public to discover all the acts presented to the jury. The selection shows constitute the first stage of the competition and are divided into two different programs. The artists present their creations before the international jury and the public. Several sessions are offered between January 22nd and 24th.
Two-hour shows at reduced prices also allow you to discover a selection of the best acts in a shorter and more accessible format, ideal for families or spectators wishing to experience the Festival for the first time.
The highlight of the event is undoubtedly the Gala Evening with Awards Ceremony, held on January 26, 2027. On this occasion, the famous Gold, Silver and Bronze Clowns are awarded, as well as numerous special awards given by international juries and partners.
After the awards ceremony come the highly anticipated Winners' Shows, during which the winning artists present their acts again to the public until January 31, offering the opportunity to revisit the most memorable performances of this edition.
The Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival is renowned for the exceptional quality of its artistic selection. The biggest names in the world of circus have been discovered or celebrated there. At the previous edition, the Gold Clowns notably recognized Flying Fuentes Gasca, Angelina Richter, and the Suining Troupe, while numerous Silver Clowns, Bronze Clowns, Gold Juniors, Silver Juniors, and Bronze Juniors distinguished the best young international talents.
Beyond the shows, the Festival offers a vibrant atmosphere around the big top. Visitors can explore the Festival's menagerie, enjoy the Circus Café, sample food from various food trucks, visit the official shop to purchase posters, souvenirs, and other merchandise, or take advantage of the numerous parking areas located near the site. All access and directions information is readily available to facilitate the festival's arrival.
The history of the Festival is deeply intertwined with that of the Monegasque princely family. Created by Prince Rainier III in 1974, it has become, over the decades, one of the Principality's major cultural events. Since 2005, Princess Stéphanie has presided over the Festival and continued the work begun by her father. In 2012, she and her daughter, Pauline Ducruet, created the New Generation competition, dedicated to promising young artists. In 2024, the Festival celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with a grand parade through the streets of Monaco, an open-air performance in the Place du Palais Princier, and an exceptional exhibition dedicated to Prince Rainier III, founder of this event, which has become the most prestigious in the world in the field of circus arts.
