Every spring, Le Mans fait son Cirque transforms the city of Le Mans into a vast stage dedicated to contemporary circus arts. Organized by Le Plongeoir – Pôle National Cirque Le Mans Sarthe Pays de la Loire, in partnership with the City of Le Mans, this event has become one of the most important contemporary circus festivals in France. Created in 2002 by the City of Le Mans, it now brings together more than 20,000 festival-goers who come to discover the latest creations from French and international companies in a warm, family-friendly, and particularly welcoming atmosphere.
The 26th edition, taking place from May 19 to 30, 2027, will offer a comprehensive overview of contemporary circus arts over twelve days. Each year, the festival provides a snapshot of all facets of contemporary circus, from the most intimate forms to large-scale spectacular productions, blending acrobatics, juggling, balancing, aerial disciplines, physical theatre, dance, music, object manipulation, performance art, and new forms of circus writing.
The heart of the festival is located in the Sablons – Bords de l'Huisne district, around La Promenade Newton, a stone's throw from the Big Top and the Circus City, while also extending to several partner venues in Le Mans. Performances take place under the Big Top, in theaters, outdoors, and in various cultural spaces throughout the city, allowing audiences to discover the circus in diverse and sometimes unusual settings. The festival notably features La Promenade, L'Île, the museums of Le Mans, the Arche de la Nature – Maison de l'Eau, the Librairie Bulle bookstore, Les Quinconces, L'Espal, and several other locations in the city center.
The program brings together around twenty shows each year, presented by French and international companies, with several dozen performances spread throughout the festival. The artistic offerings alternate between intimate creations for a few dozen spectators, family shows accessible from a very young age, large-scale productions under a big top, performances in public spaces, experimental creations, and visual spectacles where the language of the body takes precedence over words.
But Le Mans fait son Cirque is much more than a series of shows. Throughout the festival, the public is invited to enjoy a truly immersive experience thanks to a rich parallel program including concerts, meetings with artists, discussions after some performances, professional networking events, training sessions, workshops for discovering and practicing circus arts, as well as numerous activities open to children, families, amateurs, and industry professionals. These events offer a deeper understanding of the creative process, a glimpse behind the scenes of live performance, and the opportunity to interact directly with the artistic teams.
The festival is also distinguished by its particularly friendly atmosphere. Between performances, festival-goers can enjoy the bar tent, a true meeting place set up on the Promenade, where they can have a drink, a bite to eat, and continue their conversations with the artists and other spectators. Several food trucks offer a variety of food throughout the event, including vegetarian options. During the neighborhood festival, local associations further enhance this offering with multicultural cuisine showcasing flavors from around the world.
Visitors can also explore the festival's official shop, offering books, risographs, posters, screen-printed t-shirts, tote bags and other souvenirs from this new edition.
The festival places particular emphasis on the comfort and experience of its audience. The teams constantly adapt to weather conditions to ensure the smooth running of performances. In case of rain, outdoor shows are moved to covered spaces whenever possible. During periods of extreme heat, several measures are implemented: ventilation of the tents, free access to drinking water fountains, distribution of water sprayers among the audience, adjusted performance times, and ample shaded areas provided by the trees along the Promenade Newton, located on the banks of the Huisne River.
Accessibility is also a priority for the festival. The various venues are designed to accommodate people with reduced mobility. Several shows are identified as visual, making them particularly accessible to deaf, hard-of-hearing, or non-native French speakers. Shows suitable for families are clearly marked in the program, while recipients of the AAH (Adult Disability Allowance) can benefit from the reduced rate upon presentation of proof of eligibility.
Committed to sustainable development, Le Mans fait son Cirque encourages active transportation and eco-friendly behavior. Festival-goers are encouraged to use trains, trams, buses, bicycles, or carpooling to reach the various venues. Bicycle parking is available in front of the main festival locations, while Le Mans SNCF train station is just a seven-minute tram ride away. The festival also promotes the use of reusable water bottles with several free drinking fountains, accepts personal containers at food trucks, provides a deposit-return system for cups, and encourages waste sorting throughout the site.
Easily accessible from all over France, Le Mans is only 55 minutes from Paris by TGV, 40 minutes from Angers, 50 minutes from Rennes and 1 hour 20 minutes from Nantes, making the festival an ideal destination for a cultural stay focused on contemporary circus.
