On February 8 and 9, 2027, the Théâtre de la Rotonde in Thaon-les-Vosges hosts Diaboléro, a contemporary circus creation by Compagnie 24 bringing together eight top-level diabolists around a mythical work of classical music: Maurice Ravel's Boléro.
For 60 minutes, the diabolo becomes much more than a juggling object. Between virtuosity, theatre, dance, confidences, humour and collective choreography, the artists explore the place of the individual within the group and gradually reveal their worlds, their research and their vulnerabilities.
The show is structured in two main parts. The first, dedicated to introspection, allows the audience to discover the eight artists, their relationships, and their research around the diabolo. Voice-overs, soundscapes, familiar music, and original compositions accompany these portraits, creating an atmosphere that is sometimes sensitive and serious, and sometimes full of humor.
Diaboléro thus tackles very human subjects: the need for recognition, self-confidence and self-image, integration, discrimination, the fear of failure, hyperactivity, and even the fears of aging and injury. Technical virtuosity is therefore never an end in itself: it serves a genuine circus and theatrical style.
The second part gradually shifts the performance towards a grand, collective orchestration. The eight diabolists come together around Ravel's Boléro for a choreography of approximately 17 minutes, conceived as a crescendo. Like Ravel's composition, the individual talents gradually merge to create a spectacular, shared work.
The creation also embraces the small imperfections inherent in live juggling: the goal is not to transform the performers into perfectly synchronized machines, but to preserve the roughness and fragility that make the performance human, sensitive and moving.
The artistic direction is by Priam Pierret, with dramaturgy and staging by Esther Mollo. The original musical compositions are by Jean-Christophe Cheneval.
On stage, the public will see Carla Carnerero, Victor de Bouvère, Camille Grappin, Pierre Ledoux, Yuyin Lin, Nico Pires, Théo Scarito and Robin Spinelli, eight artists united around a shared passion for diabolo and juggling research.
Created in September 2025, Diaboléro lies at the crossroads of contemporary circus, juggling, diabolo, dance, and physical theatre. A particularly interesting creation for juggling enthusiasts, it is also designed for a family audience who can discover the full artistic and choreographic richness of the diabolo.
