As part of the SPRING 2027 Festival, an international festival of new circus forms in Normandy, Compagnie La Boule, led by artists Liam Lelarge and Kim Marro, presents Toupie, its new contemporary circus creation, on Saturday, March 20, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. at the MJC Rive Gauche in Rouen. The show is free and lasts approximately 50 minutes.
After La Boule, their first creation in which their two intertwined bodies attempted to move forward together, Liam Lelarge and Kim Marro continue their exploration of movement with Toupie. This time, they focus on rotation in all its forms.
The spinning top fascinates with its stubborn insistence on remaining upright even though it always seems on the verge of falling. It is precisely this fragile equilibrium that fuels the performance: a state of suspension between control and surrender, speed and slowness, balance and collapse. For 50 minutes, the two artists simply seek to spin, but in doing so, they explore a multitude of physical, acrobatic, and sometimes deliberately unconventional situations.
True to a deliberately simple aesthetic and a delightfully kitsch universe, situated somewhere on the border between the very beautiful and the very ugly, Liam and Kim spin on each other, hang a few centimeters from the ground, perform lifts and also try to twirl different objects.
In this creation, the audience will encounter, among other things, a suspended harness, acrobatic lifts, spinning tops made with the body, cowboy boots, a leaf blower, a surprising "trousers flag," a human disco ball, and even a small kiosk. This improbable inventory gives a glimpse into the playful and unique world imagined by the two circus artists.
Liam Lelarge and Kim Marro met during their training at the National Circus Arts Centre in Châlons-en-Champagne (CNAC). Kim specialized in Cyr wheel and Liam in trapeze. However, as with their first creation, they have chosen here to set aside their preferred apparatus in order to place their bodies, their relationship, and their shared exploration of movement at the heart of the performance.
Created in March 2027 as part of the SPRING Festival, Toupie is the second creation of Compagnie La Boule. It follows La Boule, created in 2023, a show in which the two artists formed a strange common body of nearly 120 kg, moving forward through lifts, weight transfers, balances and acrobatics.
