From November 13 to 15, 2026, the Théâtre de la Cité – Centre Dramatique National Toulouse Occitanie hosts Thaumazein, a contemporary circus creation conceived and performed by Jonathan Guichard and Lauren Bolze, of Compagnie HMG. Presented with La Grainerie, as part of Pyrenart II, this show blends circus, movement and choreographic writing around an apparatus as monumental as it is unusual.
At the center of the stage is a spectacular object: an immense spinning top, six meters in diameter, massive and in motion. On this unstable and inclined surface, two protagonists try to meet, to help each other, and to build something together.
In this world where gravity seems to have changed its rules, bodies must constantly adapt. The structure moves, tilts, and partially escapes the artists' control. Each movement then becomes a negotiation with balance, but also with the other.
Thaumazein explores the relationship between two individuals through movement and sometimes acrobatic situations. Jonathan Guichard and Lauren Bolze play with the awkwardness, misunderstandings, excesses, failures, and small victories that mark any attempt to work together.
The unpredictable movements of this gigantic spinning top become so many obstacles to overcome. Despite the instability of the terrain, the two performers persist in their alliance. Little by little, the contours of a relationship emerge, both strong and fragile, in which the equilibrium of one may depend on the presence of the other.
Blending contemporary circus, acrobatics, and dance, the show unfolds a world full of mischief, virtuosity, humor, and tenderness. In a world that sometimes spins too fast and where everything can suddenly change, Thaumazein poetically reminds us that an outstretched hand can be enough to help us stay upright.
The title itself illuminates the artists' approach. Thaumazein – θαυμάζειν in Greek – evokes astonishment, that feeling provoked by an unexpected or unusual situation that goes beyond simple surprise and awakens our curiosity. For this creation, Jonathan Guichard and Lauren Bolze imagine their own world and, through it, question our way of being together.
The artistic team
The concept and performance are by Jonathan Guichard and Lauren Bolze. Jonathan Guichard also composed the music and designed the set, while Lauren Bolze is responsible for the choreography.
The dramaturgy is entrusted to Marie Fonte, the construction to Cyril Malivert, the sound design to Nicolas Carrière, the lighting design to Thomas Dupeyron and the costumes to Noëlle Camus.
The lighting and sound operation is handled by Charlotte Eugoné or Paul Fontaine, and the stage management by Nina Tanné or Silas Hintzsche; Sébastien Dehaye was in charge of this function during the creation.
Production and distribution are handled by Full-Full – Nicolas Feniou and Sarah Mégard, with Jean-Baptiste Clément in administration. Production is managed by Compagnie HMG.
The project brings together many partners and co-producers of contemporary French circus: L'Estive – Scène nationale de Foix et de l'Ariège, Culture Commune – Scène nationale du bassin minier du Pas-de-Calais, Le Carré Magique – Pôle national Cirque en Bretagne, Le Plongeoir – Pôle national Cirque Le Mans, Théâtre Le Vellein – Scènes de la CAPI, La Verrerie – Pôle national Cirque Occitanie Alès, CIRCa – Pôle national Cirque Auch, as well as the Plateforme 2 Pôles Cirque en Normandie, bringing together La Brèche in Cherbourg and the Cirque-Théâtre d'Elbeuf.
The show also benefited from residencies and support from La Garance – Scène nationale de Cavaillon, L'Essieu du Batut, Théâtre de la Digue – Compagnie 111 / Aurélien Bory in Toulouse, La Batoude – centre des arts du cirque et de la rue, as well as from CENTQUATRE-PARIS.
The project is supported by the DRAC Occitanie, the DGCA, the Occitanie Region, and the Ariège Department. It also receives support from L'Estive as part of the Pyrenart II project, co-financed by the European Union through the Interreg VI-A Spain-France-Andorra – POCTEFA 2021-2027 program.
Since 2025, Compagnie HMG has been associated with L'Estive – Scène nationale de Foix et de l'Ariège and benefits from an agreement with the DRAC Occitanie for the years 2025-2026.
