Ballroom is an amazing show combining juggling, contemporary circus, magic, and musical theatre, presented by the Belgian company Post uit Hessdalen. On February 3rd and 4th, 2027, the audience in Auray is invited to enter a most unusual performance venue: a truck completely transformed into a small theatre.
Within this intimate space lies a universe of concrete, light, and movement, conceived specifically to accommodate the trajectories of juggler Stijn Grupping's balls. For over twenty years, the artist has explored the possibilities offered by bouncing balls and their interaction with space. In Ballroom, this exploration takes on an almost magical dimension: the balls strike the walls, change direction, accelerate, decelerate, and sometimes seem to float or make their own decisions.
When the balls become the choreographers
Initially, everything seems to revolve around a repetitive task: someone has to put the same balls back into the same bin over and over again. Day after day, the same action is repeated, without anyone really knowing why.
To escape this monotony, the character begins throwing balls against the walls. The trajectories gradually lengthen and the entire space becomes his playground.
Sometimes graceful and deceptively simple, sometimes powerful and complex, the trajectories of the balls gradually compose an extremely precise choreography of bouncing and juggling.
But things don't necessarily go as planned. The balls gradually seem to break free from the juggler, until they appear to possess a will of their own. The relationship between the artist, the objects, space, and gravity then transforms into a fascinating game of illusion.
Through sheer virtuosity, rigorous training, and a touch of magic, Stijn Grupping blurs the spectator's perceptions. Where does juggling technique end? Where does illusion begin? It is precisely at this boundary that Ballroom constructs its universe.
Juggling and music are closely linked
The sound dimension also plays a crucial role in the show.
Stijn Grupping is accompanied by musicians Jochem Baelus and Frederik Meulyzer, who construct a unique musical universe from the objects and sounds available around them.
The impacts, the rebounds, the silences, and the rhythms thus engage in a dialogue with the music. The movement of the balls and the soundscape gradually seem to merge into a single score.
Without saying a word, the artists take the audience on a journey where juggling, rhythm, music, illusion and visual poetry meet.
A show in a truck
One of the great distinguishing features of Ballroom is its set design.
The audience does not sit in a traditional theatre hall or under a big top, but directly in a truck converted by the company into a performance space.
Inside, set designer and visual artist Lodewijk Heylen has created a striking mineral setting in concrete. The walls become essential partners for the juggler: the balls strike them, bounce off them, and traverse the space along carefully constructed trajectories.
This proximity allows spectators to perceive every movement, every impact, and every detail of the manipulation. The setup thus transforms a simple truck trailer into a veritable laboratory dedicated to juggling, spatial perception, and the laws of gravity.

Ballroom is a creation by Stijn Grupping and Ine Van Baelen.
Stijn Grupping performs in the show, while Ine Van Baelen directs. The set design is by Lodewijk Heylen, and the music is composed by Frederik Meulyzer and Jochem Baelus.
The show has notably been selected for the TheaterFestival 2025 and is touring numerous European festivals and cultural venues.

Suitable for ages 5 and up, Ballroom is a show entirely without words, allowing children and adults alike to be guided by images, sounds and movements.
For about 30 minutes, the audience discovers a particularly inventive form of juggling where the traditional white balls become the protagonists of a hypnotic ballet.
