The World Yo-Yo Contest 2027 will bring together the world's yo-yo elite in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, from August 4th to 7th, 2027, for four days of competition, performances, and networking. A true world championship of yo-yo, this international event gathers competitors from numerous countries each year, as well as enthusiasts, makers, collectors, and curious onlookers around a discipline that now lies at the crossroads of juggling, object manipulation, athletic performance, and artistic creation.
Under the auspices of the International Yo-Yo Federation (IYYF), the World Yo-Yo Contest represents the highest level of international competition in the discipline. On stage, competitors perform choreographed freestyle routines to music, where technical difficulty alone is not enough: precision, fluidity, originality, the construction of sequences, and stage presence also contribute to the quality of a performance. At the highest level, the yo-yo becomes a true manipulative apparatus, allowing for the creation of extremely fast and complex figures, geometric string patterns, throws, catches, and sequences perfectly synchronized with the music.
The World Championship is historically organized around several major disciplines. 1A corresponds to the modern one-handed yo-yo and encompasses a large portion of the tricks performed with the string. The spectacular 2A relies on the simultaneous manipulation of two yo-yos in a looping motion, one in each hand. In 3A, the competitor uses two string yo-yos simultaneously, with particularly complex crossovers and interactions. 4A, or Offstring, is arguably one of the categories closest to juggling: the yo-yo is no longer attached to the string and can be thrown into the air before being caught, paving the way for particularly impressive aerial tricks. Finally, 5A, or Counterweight, replaces the traditional hand attachment with a counterweight, allowing the practitioner to completely free the entire setup and play simultaneously with the yo-yo, the string, and the counterweight. The final details of the categories selected for Calgary in 2027 will, however, need to be confirmed upon publication of the rules for that edition.
