Item sold individually - Mephisto professional equipment

The Mephisto X-GRIP torch is the preferred choice for artists and performers seeking reliable, robust equipment designed for intensive use. Made in Italy by Play Juggling, it incorporates a central shaft made of high-density polymer alloy (PX3 technology). This technical choice ensures perfect weight consistency from torch to torch, while also acting as excellent thermal insulation between the flame head and the handle.

X-GRIP Ergonomics and PX3 Robustness

The handle is covered with a heat-shrinkable rubber X-GRIP for optimal grip. The central section is made of a polymer alloy, providing better weight consistency compared to wood. Beneath the X-Grip is a true club-style handle , offering comfort, durability, and easy maintenance. In the event of breakage or wear at the end of the grip's lifespan, the handle underneath allows you to continue using the torch as if it were brand new.

NetJuggler's review

"This torch model is one of the most robust and pleasant to use. Compared to the Henrys Nite Flite torch, this model is a little heavier, probably allowing for more robust components. The choice of wick size means there's something for beginners (50mm) and for those who want big flames (70mm) – be warned, it's much hotter!"

FAQ Mephisto X-GRIP Torches

  • Is the wick easy to replace?
Yes. The high-density Kevlar is attached with screws, allowing for a "Sushi Roll" style installation. It's the most robust system and the easiest to maintain yourself. I've made a short amateur video that will guide you when the time comes to change your strands:

    Video youtube
  • What is the difference between 50mm and 70mm?
The 70mm wick offers a larger flame and a slightly bigger fuel reservoir, while the 50mm is lighter and offers a more responsive rotation. If you're a beginner, opt for the 50mm wicks, as the 70mm ones produce truly massive flames. If you're unsure which to choose, you can always switch from a 50mm to a 70mm wick later.
  • Why a PX3 shaft rather than a wooden one?
The PX3 shaft and its body (a technical polymer alloy) used for the torch body (the connection between the aluminum and the handle) offer perfect weight consistency between each torch, something wood cannot achieve. Furthermore, it is impervious to moisture and provides superior thermal insulation. It is also, of course, more durable over time.
  • Does the center of gravity really change?
Compared to a club, the center of gravity is slightly different; a torch rotates a bit more. But the difference is subtle and won't create any real difficulty in transitioning from clubs to torches. And as an aside, soaking the Kevlar adds weight to the head. The feeling of juggling without soaking the wicks is therefore slightly different from juggling a soaked torch. The flame also helps slow the torch's rotation. As it burns, the mass decreases along with the combustion at the top. I'm just sharing this information to pique your curiosity, but rest assured, it has very little practical impact.
  • How to preserve X-GRIP?
Avoid storing your torches in an airtight or waterproof bag with damp wicks. The fumes from odorless petroleum jelly could chemically degrade the grip. Let them breathe. This information also applies to all silicone parts on the rest of your fire equipment; it's an important point to remember when storing and transporting your fire equipment.
  • Is it permissible to place lit torches on the ground?
Avoid this! Or at least for the shortest time possible. Leaving the torch on the ground with the flame head on concrete or stone will significantly increase the temperature of your equipment. Kevlar, even without being burned, has very high resistance—in fact, this is one of its main characteristics—but once a certain temperature exceeds 300°C, the Kevlar fibers will begin to weaken. This information applies not only to this torch but to all your fire equipment. Fire equipment likes to move and "live"! We are often asked for advice on using Kevlar on statues or stage sets for art installations, and Kevlar will work in these contexts, but since it will be used statically, it will often have a shorter lifespan than on juggling equipment, which is constantly in motion.

    50 mm or 70 mm

What should I buy if I Juggle with 3 torches and I do tricks,50 mm or 70 mm?

      Hello! đź‘‹

When juggling with three fire torches and performing tricks, the choice between a 50 mm wick or a 70 mm wick mainly depends on your juggling style and your comfort level.

Here are a few points to consider:

      50 mm wick :
Easier to handle, the flames don't get in your way.
Ideal for fast routines and precise tricks.
Allows for smoother movements, especially if you are comfortable with quick motions.

      70 mm wick :
Offers better visibility during performances, you'll get more of a Wow effect especially for the audience.
Produces a larger flame, which can be very impressive in shows. You will feel the heat and the flames will get in your way for at least 20 to 30% of the beginning of the burntime

Ultimately, if you are more experienced and perform complex tricks, the 50 mm wick could be the optimal choice for its precision. On the other hand, if you want to impress the audience with a strong, beautiful flame and you are comfortable with the extra weight, you might choose the 70 mm wick.

The weight difference is small, it's more about the size of the flames. If you're a beginner I would recommend the 50mm :-)

      Happy juggling!

    Changing the wick

    Good morning,

I want to change the Kevlar tip on my torches. How do I do this?

      Re: Changing the wick

Good morning, Changing a torch wick is pretty simple. Here's a home video where I explain how! The technique is the same for changing wicks on other types of fire juggling equipment, such as a staff, for example.

    Passing with Henrys/Mephisto

    Good evening ! :)

I plan to buy fire torches, and one of the uses of these torches will be passing with my teammate who has Henrys :) During a passing game, is the difference between the torches annoying or even disturbing?

    Good evening!

      Re: Passing with Henrys/Mephistos

You will indeed have a different juggling sensation and comfort between these two torches. Different mass and mass distribution. They can juggle very well together, but you will lose technique and comfort. The ideal if you work seriously on passing is to have all the same torches. The Mephisto torch is however more robust than the Henrys torch and it is a little heavier.
