Meteor – Monkey Fist 1m40 – NetJuggler:

Equipped with Monkey Fist 5×5 heads of Ø95 mm , this long meteor is designed for those who like to exploit massive momentum and slow and readable trajectories . Its total length (TL) of 140 cm (string + heads) combined with a distance between heads (LBT) of 122 cm offers a generous lever arm: ideal for wide arcs, horizontal “helicopter” rotations and controlled throws.

Meteor Twista – Monkey Fist with two light-colored Kevlar heads, each measuring 95 mm in diameter, suspended from a black cord. The equipment is designed for juggling performances with particular attention to movement control and safety.

Each Monkey Fist is tied with Ø10 mm Kevlar around a lightweight, non-absorbent core. The result: the mass remains stable throughout the combustion process, with no "weight loss" as the wick burns. Allow 200g per head , for a total mass of approximately 450g per pair (including hardware). Average flame time: 8 to 9 minutes . The heads are each mounted on a swivel and all hardware is stainless steel for long-term reliability.

NetJuggler's review of the Monkey Fist Meteor:

This set is clearly aimed at advanced practitioners who work on slow spinning, wide spirals and precise throws. If you are comfortable with 95–100 mm poi contacts, you will find a familiar feeling of mass, but multiplied by the length. The main advantage: the weight doesn't move during the burn, so your timing remains calibrated from start to finish. In return, it requires its own technique: sharp braking, anticipation of inertia return and management of the stage space. It's a visual machine, but one that doesn't forgive approximations.

Technical characteristics:

  • Mass of a head: 200 g (Monkey Fist 5×5 in Kevlar Ø10 mm, non-absorbent core).
  • Total mass (rope + heads + hardware): ≈ 450 g.
  • Total length: 140 cm (measured length, heads included).
  • Distance between heads: 122 cm (LBT), slightly adjustable (±5 cm) via knots.
  • Diameter of a Monkey Fist: 95 mm.
  • Rope: Black Technora Ø7 mm (9 mm splices) – high thermal resistance, very low elongation.
  • Swivels: one per head to limit twisting and maintain smooth rotation.
  • Quick links and hardware: stainless steel (no corrosion, no toxic fumes).
  • Average burn time: 8–9 minutes depending on fuel and soaking method.

For what type of practice?

  • Target audience: seasoned professional artists, flow artists experienced in managing heavy inertia.
  • For outdoor use only and with a significant security perimeter.
  • Ideal for slow spinning, slow orbitals, horizontal spirals, throws/catch and “large format” choreographic sequences.

Quick comparison:
Twista Polyvalent (75 cm) : mid-range, responsiveness and technical/visual versatility.
Twista Large (145 cm LT / 120 cm LBT) : long, strong inertia, large scenic loops.
Twista Monkey Fist (140 cm LT / 122 cm LBT) : long + heavy spherical heads → constant weight, slow flow, precise throws and massive fire presence.

Meteor Twista – Monkey Fist with two beige Kevlar heads, each measuring 95 mm in diameter, attached to a black cord. The heads are knotted and designed for juggling performances, emphasizing safety and movement control.

Origins and evolution of the discipline:

The meteor descends from the Chinese liúxīng chuí , a flexible weapon using a long lever arm to generate force and range. There are cousins: South American bolas (hunting), Maori poi (dance) or rope dart (weapon).

Since the 1980s, contemporary circus and flow arts have diverted these principles to create a choreographic language centered on inertia, rhythm and trajectory. Current fire versions rely on technical materials (kevlar, Technora, stainless steel) and modular assemblies (links, swivels) to combine safety, expressiveness and maintenance.

Parallels between weapon and art:

The length and mass of this model recall the martial approach: exploiting significant torque on large arcs to control space. On stage, this inertia becomes a graphic tool: spectacular slow motion, clean trajectories, legibility of movement. Wraps, plan changes and blocks are still inspired by soft weapon capture and control techniques.

Meteor Twista – Monkey Fist with two light-colored Kevlar heads, each with a diameter of 95 mm, attached to a braided black cord. The heads feature a knotted design, intended for juggling performances, emphasizing movement control and safety.

Optional additional products:

Find our selection of Kevlar protection (gloves, sleeves, hats, etc.) suitable for long handling and large flames.

The Technora rope is interchangeable with other Twista models if you want to modulate your setups or create a multi-use pack.

Essential Precautions : For trained adults only. Inspect knots, links, swivels, and Kevlar/Technora for wear before each session. Wear natural fiber clothing. Work with a fire attendant, a fire extinguisher, a fire blanket, and a bucket of water/sand within easy reach. Store your equipment completely dry and away from any heat source.

Tips and FAQs: How to practice Monkey Fist

Why does the weight remain constant during the burn?
The core of the heads is non-absorbent: fuel does not seep into it. The mass therefore does not drop during combustion, which guarantees an identical feel from start to finish.

How to adjust the length without reassembling everything?
A center-placed knot reduces about 5 cm of LBT; a knot near the splice removes ~10 cm of TL. Do this cold, check for symmetry, and note your ideal length.

Warm-up and drills recommended?
Shoulder/wrist/hip mobilization, wide pendulums, arm/torso wraps, soft catch braking, low throws and safe catches. Film yourself to refine posture and timing.

When to switch to fire?
After several weeks of cold training, when your sequences are fluid and reproducible, and your braking no longer generates uncontrolled returns.

Maintenance and storage?
Clean cold if dirty, let dry completely. Separate the string heads during storage to preserve the Technora/Kevlar. Replace the wick as soon as it frays or “powders”.
